------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
As the name implies, the Sentry tank was created as a light vehicle suitable
for long-range patrols. The hover ability was chosen as it allowed the vehicle
to travel with speed and even over water if the situation so arose. .3 tons of
cargo provide room for supplies in the event that the driver finds himself in
the field for an extended period.

==Variants:==
The turret is designed so that it can easily be removed and replaced with
other weapons. The most common replacements are an SRM 4 or 4 machine guns. An
version under consideration arms the vehicle with 4 RL 10s, and has the ammo
bay used for additional cargo.

A patrol vehicle with an LRM system as it's main weapon? Ammo issues become a major limitation to the vehicle in the long run as well as the short term once it get's into combat.

You would be better off going with Lasers or a mix of weapons. OR changing the fluff, calling the vehicle a support unit or a cheap missile system or something other then a patrol vehicle.

I don't see a problem with it's missle system. It's longer range allows it to engage at a farther range and it's speed allows it to stay there. Reminds me of the Harrier Light Hovertank. Almost exact same stats too.

A patrol vehicle normally has weapons that are non-ammo dependant, and also don't give away their postion so clearly as LRMs would do. Counter battery Radar would give the enemy a nice grid to blast and if they are in doubt to number of units, then they are going to pound several grids around that area.

I don't see any IS power shelling out money for a missile vehicle that is toted as a patrol vehicle.

Well, we have missile tanks that can haul infantry (such as the Blizzard), so why not a missile tank that can patrol?

Just think of the official Packrat LRPV (Long Range Patrol Vehicle!). It´s armed with a SRM-6 and a rear-firering Flamer and fluff calls for a LRM-variant!

Counter-battery RADAR also gives a bright shining beacon for the tank to direct fire at. Remember that most battlefield units run RADAR-off; modern sensors can pinpoint the location of RADAR emissions, revealing the unit using it.

Simplistically put, RADAR points both ways.

Patrol doesn't mean quite the same as scouting, does it? I'd imagine these are used as cheap first warning units around major bases, where ammo is not really a concern. When Sentry number 33 starts drawing artillery fire you can be pretty sure there's enemies about.

Not that I see any problem with using these for other funny duty, like laying LRM minefields. It's fast enough to go for a reload and still get the work done. A cheap unit like this also leaves others free to pursue more important goals.

No way radar works both ways...

The point here and you missed it Warhammer, is once the Sentry fires, it becomes a target. And while it can run, that doesn't alway mean it will get away, once it engages in anything other then long range figthing it's dead. Thus the enemy's return fire will be a major issue for the commander of the vehicle.

And no most units don't run radar off, they run in passive mode, till they need to go into active mode. And if the enemy has decent Elint capicaty then basic radio chatter.

Around a base sure the Sentry works fine, no ammo or lack of secondary weapons to really worry about since it has backup.

Patrolling/Scouting...both are more or less the same thing. You scout to find the enemy and watch him, you patrol to find the enemy and either watch him or engage him.

So while we have a decent missile support vehicle, we have neither a patrol or scout vehicle.

Radar can work against you. There's equipment to detect and locate a radar wave's source.

I view scouting as more of unknown/enemy territory recon. Patrolling is done more on secured/semi-secured/friendly territory. And I still don't see the problem using this tank for patrolling. It costs just under 150k. That's pretty cheap for it's size and speed. It's speed combined with it's weapon's long range give it the ability to avoid taking damage as much as possible. As far as incoming arty fire, what's the lag time between the firing of arty and it's arrival on the mapboard?

Exactly. Combat RADAR systems also listen for other sources. Pinging the battlefield will not only light up everyone on your screen, but lights you up on theirs.
