The term "head" comes from the sardine cans we call submarines. The hallways are so narrow & short, you were bound to hit your 'head' on something sitting or standing...
Ask those navy folks about that...
Most MEN still call it a head, since they need to alleviate pressure in the small one every so often.

Latrines on all navy ships are refered to as the head. And even on surface ships you have to hop and duck at the same time when you pass hatches.

My old man took me on a tour of his frigate (the Lewis B. Puller, in case anyone cares) once when I was a tyke. Those knee-knockers are hell when your legs are only a foot-and-a-half long.
