==Overview:==
Although not really notable for their achievements with battlemechs, the
Outworlds Alliance had one thing going for them - they were the only source in
the Inner Sphere for the Merlin battlemech. The Merlin was renowned as a cheap
yet sturdy multi-purpose mech, and became a minor sensation among poorer units
and nations which could not afford newer or specialized mechs.
Given this success, the Alpheratz Corporation (the manufacturers of the
Merlin) decided to use what little capital they had for the purpose of making
a new mech. The result is the Novice.
The Novice was designed around fulfilling a number of roles much like the
Merlin. An Autocannon 2, an oddity to begin with, was chosen as the main
weapon. Trading damage for range, the weapon allows the Novice to snipe at
targets from range, especially incoming aircraft.
Backing the Novice up are a trio of medium lasers and a pair of machine
guns. The machine guns are good for use for anti-infantry missions, and the
lasers offer a solid punch that allows the Novice to fight even after it uses
up the last of its ammo.
The Novice has an advantage over the Merlin in that it has hands; this
advantage means that in a pinch it can be used in a utility fashion if things
come to it. In addition, jump jets provide for additional maneuverability.

==Deployment==
Given that jump jets and autocannons are popular items among the
Federated Suns military forces, it came as no surprise when some units in the
poorer areas and on the borders placed several pre-orders; given that the
nation is also experimenting with new types of autocannon ammo, this could
prove tactically advantageous.
Likewise, it was also no surprise that the Draconis Combine has expressed
interest in the mech as a cheap way to help fill gaps left in their ranks by
recent fighting.

This machine could prove useful as support for heavier units, or even infantry. I wouldn't want to pit it against any better mechs unless there's no other choice. The low speed and light mech's armor is a bad combination there.

It certainly holds true to the fluff.

Just had a thought.....

Deploy this unit on a 1-1 basis with a Panther, who has the exact same movement speed.

Long Range - While the Panther takes on the mechs with its PPC, the Novice uses its AC/2 to snipe at any vehicles, infantry, or aerofighters.

Short Range - The Novice's lasers are used to carve up the mechs while the Novice's machine guns and the Panther's SRM rack shred the vehicles and infantry.
