Correction, the THIEF gets whacked by the mimic. I didn't say I'd bash it open without a trap check, I just said I'd bash it open.

You're assuming the rogue is stupid enough to blindly go scampering over to the chest. You also didn't say that you had the rogue check for traps--therefore, you are the one who gets whacked by the mimic.
