They are supposed to be superior. I don't think that every piece of equipment in the game needs to be perfectly balanced with every other, just that the game as a whole should be balanced. Thats why I disagree with Vagabonds comparison between the PPC and clan large pulse laser; those two pieces of equipment were never meant to be balanced.

In no particular order:
All AC/2's (including the RAC2)
Standard small laser
Small pulse laser
Heavy lasers
Light gauss
LBX5 (the 2 is already covered above)

Well by definition "superior" cannot be "balanced" ... hehe. Regardless the IS simply cannot compete with the clans, ton for ton. This is by design. The reason why the IS isn't completely annihilated is due to story reasons and whatnot ... but nothing within the game system itself offers the IS any chance against a clan pilot (better tech, better pilots ...). This is fine by me, this is what the BV system is supposed to be for so you can have like 3 on 4 Clan vs IS and have a general idea of how the battle will come out. _________________ I know nothing.

I think what he was saying is thathe disagrees on that comparison because it is comparing apples (IS tech) to oranges (clan tech) the clan pulse laser should only be judged by other clan weapons, not by IS weapons.

Yeah I completely agree and that was my point. Yeah clan pulse lasers are awesome but they are almost twice the weight of clan ER lasers which do nearly the same damage at better range for similar heat. A lot of people fail to compare clan tech to other clan tech and only go by what they themselves have experienced. I just am a very big proponent of comparitive analysis of these things and once you put them side by side most clan tech really isn't all that much more powerful than other clan tech. _________________ I know nothing.

I'm a bit late, but I will add my $.02.
I stay away from all Level 3 and special ammo. I don't understand why even have OS. I love/hate the MPL. Mostly hate because it has been used against me too many times. I am a big fan of Streak SRMs.
Then often I prevent the use of artlillary (Arrow V), C3, targeting computers and thunder LRMs. But more to control some game dyanamics than a hate relationship. _________________ "No good deed goes unpunished." - Michael Garibaldi

The O.S launchers are pathetic, you might as well go for the RL's if your after a O.S weapon, wiegh much less.
Also, why do they wiegh more than the actual weapon itself? LRM5=2 tons
LRM5 O.S=2.5?
Might as well get the original and half a ton of ammo, if you were allowed to.

I use 1/2 ton slots of ammo very often under BattleMech designer. Only bad part is that when it prints the sheets it marks it as a full ton.
The rules reasoning for the extra half ton is thats for the preloaded ammo. However IMHO it should weight less cause no feed mechinisms and such.

Nice twist on the question. But I will stay away from all the new stuff, after 3050. Also will not go through this entire post, still trying to get somewhat caught up.
SRM-2, Why?
LRM-5 Why? (yes you can gang them together)
Any Ultra other than 20 with normal rules. Less than 50% to hit with both. But with the 20, just begs to be tried.
LB2X, Why?
IS ERPPC- Hmmmmm no.
AMS- declare before being fired at, what a waste
I think that covers it.
AWAD- Do not start me on max cheesw

I find humor in the fact I start extended fights with off-the-cuff remarks. First the 24 Hexes comment, and then the nuclear bomb...
I only dislike the AC 2. The LBX AC5 does seem a little redundant, but I figure it's really harmless. Everything else I like just because it can be a plot device.
A light mech with a laser blown out pulls into a garage and they don't have the replacement laser, but they do have this old POS One Shot weapon in the back...
A four mech lance of medium mechs is exploring a canyon, when suddenly a Clan Timber Wolf drops down on top of them with Duel PPCs. The lance leader is blasted into ashes in two rounds, but one of his last shots manages to fuse the Mad Cat's leg, and a Whitworth managed to get behind the stuck Mad Cat with a medium laser and an LRM 20...
Balance is important, and that's why I limit my players in what they can use (no clan tech, C3 computers only for Veteran or Elite units, Targeting Computers only available occasionally...). I figure at the begining of a campaign my players are all cannon fodder, so why would anybody spend the big bucks on them? Also, why would they be sent anywhere where they could run into something dangerous and important?
This is not to say it doesn't happen anyway...
Unbalanced weapons are fine if they are used sparingly, and only by the GM (occasionally releasing them to the players as rewards.) You have to be careful not to unbalance the game by letting your players get all the good stuff. You have to keep something in reserve that they can sweat over.
In my case, I have a bad time with packrats in my games. I just finished a Star Wars RPG that lasted 12 weeks. My players:
A Jedi who collects blaster rifles
A Jedi who collects broken Vibroblades
A smuggler who collects alien porn
A Trandoshan who collects skulls
A Scoundrel who collects melted Holodisks
An Ewok who made a mark on his staff for called shots to the nuts.
This is what I put up with.
I swear, next semester if they start collecting Gause Rifles...

Those are easy collections. We had one that collect teeth. From enemies killed/eaten and party members alike....
