Its not better in terms of the potential use of a mech, but it is better in terms of realism and game design. Omnimechs kill off the idea of needing specialized mechs, hard points do not. They increase flexibility over static designs but they still force the designer to work around a concept or role, which is not required when using Btech catch-all omni technology.

The hard points idea already is more realistic. If you think otherwise you should try designing a real robot.
The 10% mass cost for omni technology is a good start, but is not as fun as hard points IMO.
