The Dragon's main weapon is the LRM 10. With the terrain I was able to keep around 7-9 hexes away from him and was doing heavy damage. At that range he was only using the large lasers, so he kept overheating. once he got the lucky crit shot I had no choice but to close with him so that I could use my medium laser. What can I say, it is a difficult tactical win and he was rolling better than I was. Other than that one shot I think I could have pulled it out. Besides that, this guy is good, he always knew exactly where to be. I have not had to think this hard in a mech on mech battle in a while.

Ah ok. That makes more sense. I thought you were out at like 15 to 18 hexes and I was like "ACK! No!"
You should have gone physical. That armor can't take physical attacks. That is now my only critisism

That armor is not as bad as it looks. It's only pitiful on the arms. Up close the Ostsol is even more deadly. It can run, fire a LL, 2 ML, and punch twice (or kick) without overheating. The Dragon can't put up half that much firepower up close. The odds are simply against you.

I did, the first turn after the LRM was lost I charged him and did considerable damage. The only problem is, I missed my piloting roll and fell while at the same time he kicked me in the left leg and almost finished taking it off. By this point I could not risk getting in physical range because my leg was almost gone.

That is what we figured out. Once the Dragon loses it's LRM it is screwed.

Yeah I wouldn't call this the Ostol being good, I'd say bad luck was to blaim.
I've played the Dragon on a number of occasions, and I've always been able to get physical with anything I couldn't destroy with weapons...
... assuming that luck was equally distributed. However, their have been times when luck turned my way. I was fighting on the first turn, fired a shot with the AC/5 and nailed the center torso of an Challanger, rolled snake eyes, and two crits. Knocked out the gyro. It was the first round of the game. It was funny, but I'm not going to say I could take out a challanger on every first turn of any fight with an AC/5.
It was a fluke! much like this battle sounds.
BTW, get rid of those dice, they betrayed you.

Actually one of them was rolling good. It was the one that kept coming up as a 1 when I needed to make piloting rolls. On the second match we playing that day, I needed an 11 to hit with my srm6 at 9 hexes away and I rolled a 12. Still lost the battle, but it really ticked him off, since he kept missing with 2 of his medium lasers at point blank range. He actually rolled a 2 and a 3 on consecutive turns with the same laser.
This is actually a closer match up that it looks, but whoever gets that lucky shot will most likely win. When all else is even.
It is reassuring that it was a lucky shot rather than a mistake of mine that lost the battle.
