500 feet is not a whole lot of altitude, actually. I would probably allow for spotting visually up to about 3000 feet (very difficult, but possible; 1000 feet would be about it for most average pilots without technology to assist).

Truth be told, I pulled the number 500 off an old DOS based helicopter game. It was called something to the effect of Chopper 2000 or something, but the flight ceiling in the game was 500 feet, so I coopted it. No one complained and it works.

Well, if 500 feet works, then have fun with it. From a reality standpoint (I know, I know ), 500 feet is pretty low.... it's the minimum altitude for maneuvering for fixed wing aircraft (According to the FAA): we have to be at 500 feet after take-off before we can start to turn to the heading of our first waypoint, etc. Rotory wing aircraft can manuever at lower altitudes (legally), but that's because they're more maneuverable anyway.

Well, the apparent ceiling on the RAH-66 Commanche is 15,000 feet. Its true ceiling is prolly in the 17-19,000 range.

Having a chart that equates real range is a good idea. Only really works in a high VTOL game though.

And, another thought...firign angles? I assume weapons in the arms could be pointed in the proper direction...but weapons in the torso might be limited to a certain arc and might only be able to fire 45 degrees or 70 degrees or something.

Oh and about engines...VTOLs can have fusion engins right?

Anyways...its just fun to be had...
