You get a lesser machine in weight class and weapons load for the same BV though. BV based battles make the clan force much smaller and gives the IS forces a numerical advantage.

Aye, you do, BUT..
BV seems to lack a good way to handle a targetting computer, which is an phenominal asset. It certainly doesn't add an adequate amount to the BV of a mech.
To get the lower gunnery numbers, if you were gonna modify your gunner and pilot numbers, you'd need to spend .1% or so of the entire mech BV. The addition of a targetting computer doesn't add nearly enough, especially on heavier mechs.
I don't mind. I actually enjoy fighting against Clan Mechs, or using Clan mechs.. What I do hate though is the idea that the inner sphere needed to get all this level 3 technology to compete with the Clans..

Agreeded; personally I like battles where the I.S. has level one technology or only a little bit of level two technology vs. Clan 'mechs. Getting the force levels balanced can take some tinkering (I'm rarely completely satisfied with either tonnage ratios or B.V.), but if you get it right the battle becomes a match between quality and quantity.
A word of advice to clan players trying to destory an I.S. company with three 'mechs; you can do it but avoid swamps.

The action is pretty well scattered across the board so the odds are remaining unchanged.

| That's why I went with that 'mech...as the BV cap pretty much confined me to light 'mechs (for a good reason) I wanted something with range and speed. Still, chihawk is right, one hit in the wrong spot changes everything.

The right hit in the wront spot can kill any mech...Clan ERPPC to the head, gauss to the head...oh well, your just more likely to die in a light when facing a heavy or assault, but oh well
