The problem I saw was that players who use them really didn't know how to play AeroTech.
The main advantage of the LAM is that it funtions both a Fighter and as a Mech, but all the players I've seen use it leave it in AirMech mode so they can jump around like crazy, and using it only in the BattleMech sense. The whole idea of it's purpose is really lost to them. It's used a a muchkin Mech rather than staying true to it's design.
I suppose if you ran an event with only LAMs and Aerofighters these people would have no reason to play.

Back in 93 at UCON (local con in Ann Arbor) a guy ran a game like you described it was a riot of fun! since the LAMs started out in fighter mode and then become airmechs and the those who only fighters whinning about it...it was a great battle, one that kept everyone focused on the game and what was happen in it.
