The refs don't do that in hockey either. You're thinking of the National Felon League.
Thank you drive-through.

They do it in hockey, they did it all the time in the playoffs. I'm not sure about the reg. season though.

That's to see if a goal was actually a goal.
Any video review of on-ice infractions comes AFTER the game is over and done with.
The statement still stands--scoring overcomes bad officiating. It's a truism in any sport.

AQ: Point taken, I see that now. Fischer comes to mind about this.

Scoring always overcomes poor officiating.
(a little truth I've learned in my years as a hockey fan)

Errm, sorry madam, but hockey has nothing to do with this. In football the referee can have a decisive impact on the game, especially with the perfectioning of defensive tactics and the trend towards smaller scoring as has been pointed out by another poster in this thread.
In a final, the problem only compounds, as statistics prove that the team that scores first wins most of the time, and both teams are much more concentrated so the defensive errors that allow scoring chances are much diminished.
Under such circumstances, bad ref calls can have a decisive impact on the game.
There's something wrong with the bloody referees in this world cup. There were never problems of this magnitude before, apart from a slight bias in favour of the host team during the first phase, and in favour of the big teams, sometimes.
The Spanish players did their job, scoring two perfectly valid and legal goals, as has been admitted by everybody, even the British and German media. And there's no love lost between either of the two and them.
There are too many coincidences, and the Germans have seen the light, they are justifiably wary of the refs when they play against Korea. It's going to be a laugh riot when they get screwed too.
OTOH, if Germany wins due to ref's help, it's going to be damn funny seeing the Koreans raising a hell about it.
I do not believe the refs have been bribed or received instructions, but knowing human nature a ref or line judge from a impoverished Third World nation is bribe bait.
In the most magnanimous interpretation, what we are seeing here is gross incompetence as a result of PCness and payback of favors. FIFA's secretary Blatter reelection is highly questionable, and the appointment of unexperienced and untrained refs from Asia and Africa can be linked to the support Blatter has received from those federations representatives. The corruption in the FIFA is a voiced out loud secret. Also, probably somebody thout it PC to include refereeing teams from all the world.
No, I do no think Blatter himself is rigging matches, at worst he's a corrupt and responsible of professional incompetence, but you are very naive if you think sporting events are clean, take a look at the Olympics, so the worse things can and do happen, specially with big money involved, and the plot thickens.. the vicepresident of the FIFA it's a South Korean...
Incompetence? certainly Fraud? probably.
Makes one want to quit football in disgust.
I have to stress again that football has been a clean sport until now, refereeing mistakes for the most cases have been honest human errors, but this is an outrage!

Scoring always overcomes bad officiating. It's true for hockey, it's true for American Rules Football, it's true for futbol, it's even true for freaking water polo.
Not that I expect you to get it, but hope always springs eternal.

AQ, although scoring restores morale, still, getting shot down in a close game like that is damaging. I think you may be underestamating the effect of bad officiating.

Not really. Winners suck it up and find a way to overcome. Losers just sit and whine (just ask the Toronto Maple Laffs).

AQ,
Yes, scoring overcomes bad officiating, BUT.. and this is a key word.. The referees in soccer can have a pronounced impact on the game, and sometimes do.
For example, in Hockey Offsides is relatively easy to officiate.. you have a nice blue line to use to judge your players by.. In soccer, offsides is very subjective. A bad line judge, and what should be a very legal goal is called back for offsides. This actually happens alot, and is one of the reasons I used to like to play soccer on the multi-use fields cause of the football yard markers.
I watched some of the Spain game highlights, and I wasn't cheering for either team, and I must admit that it looked poorly called to me.

This may be true in league play
But the final rounds are played as KO matches.
You only have a single chance to reach the next round.

One final statement before wrapping this up.
At the very least, what's happening this World Cup is a most serious incompetence and professional negligence on the part of the FIFA.
More fuel to the theory, the FIFA Spanish representative, asked specifically to not appoint that son of a dog and a hyena...err, I mean "that Egyptian referee" for the match. We have had serious ref errors in the match against Ireland, and we were requesting experienced refs for the quarter finals. Look what we got. Also, another reason is that that bastard son of a pig and a leperous mutt.. err, I mean "that Egypitian referee" was considedred "bribe-bait"
This data is of interest, Korea is consireded the third most corrupt country of the world.
And they have the nerve to request that if they get to the finals, that the game sould be played in Korea instead of Yokohama, Japan, as scheduled...

Brazil beat Turkey 1-0. This means that the final will be between Germany and Brazil.
