As chihawk said, that's generally how we run it. What I allowed for with this game here was really just to see how things went. So, it was a essentially a test. And all it did was validate the way we've been running it.

You could give everyone the same mech and 3/4 P/G. To see who's the better tactician...

Nah, half the fun is picking your mech. Some, like me, go for the big guns and try to fight their way to the win while other like Pinhead and Mordel pick quick mechs and try to outrun everyone.
At TotalCon the big guns do a ton of damage but with the time limit (3.75 hours or so) never win.

In all fairness, they can't kill the quick 'Mechs before they make the required laps. Unless there are a small number of quick 'Mechs and a lot of "larger" ones. In those rare cases, the quick 'Mechs usually die because it's almost impossible to run that gauntlet!
