To help break up enemy assault formations and destroy lighter machines before

Well, to be honest, this is nothing but a Behemoth with less 2ndary weapons, but about twice the armour.

The prototype of the Behemoth was pretty much meant to have been this, anyway.

So, is it really needed?

Also, the designation. Davion is meant to have French influence, right? So wouldn't a Renault tank be more befitting for them?

And are you trying to work in historical references? It was the Char-B (or something) that mounted two cannons, one in the hull, one in the turret.

But of course, this is just silly comments on the name that have no bearing with the overall design.

It is great to see you trying your hand at lvl 1 tanks! But this one is kinda redundant!

Oh, and on the armour thing: yes, it is wonderful that tanks can support that much of it. But they really do not need it. In fact, from my experience, only the minority of tank losses are due to actual destroyed locations. Most of the time, crits will get them. So anything over 11-13 tons of armour would be excessive, in my books!

I did not know that. Well, now I do

I thought the FedSuns were supposed to represent America and Great Britain?

No, I'm not basing the design on anything. I just wanted a big tank with twin AC/10s.

I like level 1. It's my fave to work with, unless there's some specific thing I'm trying to incorporate into the design.

Meh.

Yes, but with French influence. I thought that even the name, Davion, had some French roots....

Well, absolutely! But right off the top of my head, there are, just in lvl1, two big tanks with twin AC10s - Behemoth and Zhukov! Sorry for being a pest!

Well, I could mount a pair of Large Lasers, but i don't quite get the warm fuzzies that I do when looking at twin AC/10s.

Other possible weapon modifications:

1: Replace one AC/10 with a Large Laser, reduce ammo to 20 shots.

2: Replace one AC/10 with a PPC.

3: Replace one AC/10 with an AC/5, both with 20 shots, use extra tonnage to upgrade LRM-10 to -15.

Ah, but then you'd have a Brutus! One that weighs 1/3rd more! Hehehe, sorry!

If I were trying to emulate the french Char-B tank, it would look like this.

EDIT: changed fluff, as suggested by Jymset.

Type/Model: Renault Mod 2 Mk 1
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3025
Config: Tracked Vehicle
Rules: Level 1, Custom design

Mass: 100 tons
Power Plant: 200 Rawlings I.C.E.
Cruise Speed: 21.6 km/h
Maximum Speed: 32.4 km/h
Armor Type: Pantherskin VII Standard
Armament:
1 20mm Gatling Gun Machine Gun
2 Coventry 4 Tube Missile System SRM 4s
1 Coventry Star Fire LRM 15
  1 Defiance Killer Type T Autocannon/10
  1 Armstrong J11 Autocannon/5
Manufacturer: TharHes Industries
  Location: Twycross / JFC-OZ (THI)
Communications System: TharHes HQ CommSet
Targeting & Tracking System: TharHes Digital Scanlok 347

system. Main killing power is provided by a pair of autocannon, a Defiance
Killer Type T, and an Armstrong J11. At closer ranges, firepower is
supplemented by a pair of Coventry 4-Tube Missile Systems. Anti-infantry
capability is provided by the omni-present front-mounted 20mm Gatling Gun.

The truly noteworthy feature of the Renault is the almost impossible amount of
armor it carries. With 27 tons of Pantherskin VII armor, the Renault carries
more armor than some dropships!

You know, the other mods have some potential.

Based partially off them, and then on my ideas of the ideal tank, here we have it:

Montgomery Heavy Tank (ie Patton Mk II)
100 tons
3/5 FUSION engine (this design's strongest [speed] and weakest [fusion engine] feature)
13.5 tons of armour: F: 60, S: 40, T: 44, R: 32
Turret: PPC, AC20, LRM5 (a nod to Patton tank)
Sides: 1 MG each
Front: 2 MG, AC5 (inspired by the Clan Huey artillery tank - I love to include such a relatively beefy weapon in the hull amongst the 2ndary weapons)
Rear: 1 vehicle flamer
Ammo: 3 tons AC20, 1 ton each for MG, Flamer, AC5, LRM5.

What do you think? Part of the honour for this one is yours! And yeah, with the fusion engine, it would have to be a rich Steiner design!!

Well, I wanted the PPC. And so I *HAD* to include the fusion engine. Which tempted me to get the speed up to 3/5. Other than that, the other weapons are almost no-brainers. Oh, I did really want to stay away from SRMs - they are way too common as backup weapons for tanks! This one is meant to have a fighting chance against 'mechs, not other tanks!

Aerospace fighters have a thing for lasers, tanks a thing for SRMs!

I really like your revised edition of your tank!

Could you do me a favour and enter my tank into HMV?

That way we can compare prices and BV and the like!

edit: holy crap, the armour on your design has become truly obscene! To the point of adding very cool character to the design! You definitely have to drop a line on that one in the fluff! Otherwise, this is great as it stands!

Yeah, your tank is more efficient. By heaps!

But I think they both have valid battlefield uses.

Just a small thing - could you change the front MG to two MG, and subtract half a ton of armour? To make the values: 60/40/44/32?

Thanks very much for all that!

I think that your tank gets its points from that huuuuuuuuuge armour. One crit, and it's all for nothing. But then, the same goes for my tank and its increased speed.

The weaponry - well they don't give or take much. Mine is slightly superior up close, I guess. But yours has the crit-seeking SRMs.

Anyone care to try out a tank duel on MegaMek (I can't submit custom designs to mine)? Though I will always agree that mine is not worth double the price tag. Only good for Steiners and/or the old StarLeague days!

Sorry for the mistakes, they've been corrected. Here's how they stack up:

Category - Renault/Patton II

Battle Value - 784/800

Cost - 3,038,667/6,093,000 C-Bills

The Patton II is only 16 points more powerful in terms of BV, but costs more than twice as much.

In terms of BV, the Renault is comparable to an SCP-1N Scorpion, and the Patton II to an RFL-3N Rifleman.

In terms of cost, the Renault is comparable to a FS9-H Firestarter, and the Patton II to a WHM-6L Warhammer.

Man, a PPC on an ICE-equipped vehicle is HUGE.

Here's a variant of the Renault, the Model 3.
Type/Model: Renault Mod 3 Mk 1
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3025
Config: Tracked Vehicle
Rules: Level 1, Custom design

Mass: 100 tons
Power Plant: 200 Rawlings I.C.E.
Cruise Speed: 21.6 km/h
Maximum Speed: 32.4 km/h
Armor Type: Pantherskin VII Standard
Armament:
1 20mm Gatling Gun Machine Gun
2 Coventry 4 Tube Missile System SRM 4s
  1 Coventry StarLight LRM 10
  1 Defiance Killer Type T Autocannon/10
  1 Chaulk Model 25 PPC
Manufacturer: TharHes Industries
  Location: Twycross / JFC-OZ (THI)
Communications System: TharHes HQ CommSet
Targeting & Tracking System: TharHes Digital Scanlok 347

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The Renault heavy tank came out of the Lyran Commonwealth's need for a new
heavy tank to anchor its defensive lines, one capable of striking at all
ranges, and withstanding massive damage while reinforcements arrived, or
faster vehicles deployed behind the attacker.

==Capabilities:==
To help break up enemy assault formations and destroy lighter machines before
they reach the battle line, the Renault carries a Coventry Starlight missile
system. Main killing power is provided by a Defiance Killer Type T autocannon,
and a Chaulk 25 PPC. At closer ranges, firepower is supplemented by a pair of
Coventry 4-Tube Missile Systems. Anti-infantry capability is provided by the
omni-present front-mounted 20mm Gatling Gun.

The truly noteworthy feature of the Renault is the almost impossible amount of
armor it carries. With 20 tons of Pantherskin VII armor, the Renault carries
more armor than some dropships!

I thought the Davions were supposed to be kinda a French-Euro mix while the Lyran's are more of a Germanic-Euro. The Mariks I had pegged as the American types. Seeing as all the red tape and bureacracy that runs rampant there as well as the oddly united factionalism.
