And exactly what would you put in it's place?

I like ER small lasers. That last little bit of damage can mean the difference betwen winning and losing. I have had every weapon in an alpha strike miss except a small laser. You could put all sorts of stuff in there, but for a mech this fast what is the use? Anything ammo dependant makes it vulnerable. Besides, speed demons do not have to worry about short range weapons. One turn and they can run into short range.

Really, especially clan ER Smalls, same damage as an IS Medium Laser. 5 dam at .5 tons is no joking matter.

one of my favorite mechs is the Phantom C one ER Medium and 8 ER smalls ask somebody who has had the misfortune of going against me when I use that mech or the F variant of my Blizzard with 8 ER small lasers or the B variant on my Ice Hellion with 10 ER small lasers.A battery of them on a fast mech is ugly especially if it gets to the rear arc.

What sort of piloting skill does your enemy generally have when you attempt this maneuver. It'll work on green or regular pilots, especially if they don't hold their unit cohesion together and let you send them scattering all over the map, but an elite or veteran assault 'mech (especially a clan assault 'mech) is a force to be reckoned with. Sure, you will get that nice shot at his back...but not before he has about 7 or 8 good chances at your paper-thin armor. Chances also are any slow 'mechs may have some fire-support ruining their day. I did that to a wolverine one time; the pilot jumped him over the Hunchback I had on point (who was in the process of dismembering no less of a 'mech than a Thunderbolt), and got a few fairly pointless back shots on the Hunchback, but the Trebuchet I had standing motionless on a ridge seven or eight hexes back Hit the Wolverine with close to thirty LRMs. The Wolverine survived this sort of treatment, but a Phantom, and certainly a Dasher or Cheetah, wouldn't.

Never said against an Assault necesarily. Also I think most times any supporting units would have much better targets. No tactic is ever foolproff though. And you should consider the Cheetah is just shy of full armor bubba.

Well the Fire Moth IMHO is a death trap because of its lack of armour. But a fast mech with strong armour can be Very survivable If you can not hit it you can not hurt it a Fast light handled intelligently can be a formidable opponent a large batter of ER small lasers has a LOT of damage potential a clan ER PPC weighs 6 tons and does 15 points of damage 12 clan ER small lasers weigh 6 tons and do 60 points of damage. On a mech that moves at a 9-14.10 15 or 12-18 rate you have serious damage potential add MASC and or supercharger you can close to weapon range VERY quickly.and when you do time to rip and roar. This is from experience.

One does have to differentiate between Clan and IS ER smalls I believe. The Clan ERSL is great - a worthy replacement for the good old medium laser. The IS ERSL is less than outstanding and I'd typically put in a medium laser instead of 2 unless filling crits is very important for some reason.

Would also be good to note that if using Max Tech movement mods these ultra fast mechs become extreamly hard to hit even for clan pilots, if not, then You should slow it down to at the fastest like 8/12 cause your not gonna get your mods any bigger.

| The movement modifiers are not the only advantage to high speed they make it easy to set the range of engagement. It also makes it easy to avoid enemy weapon arcs. And make it easy to move from cover to cover.

An ER PPC or gauss rifle will still ruin your day though. Anyone packing some Pulse Lasers would cut down a Phantom as well.
I'm not denying the utility of fast 'mechs; I once used a pair of locusts to keep a Mad Cat busy, quite successfully. Generally though, the canon light 'mechs don't carry maximum armor.

Well the Cheetah almost does, it's only shy by a few points Unlike a Locust or Wasp hehe

While I certainly agree about these other advantages lowering to 8/18 would give more room for weapons and armor, a good thing when the move mods arent as high. But it also depends on a person's playing style.

This is one of the things I like about my Frog. People forget just how far 9 hexes are on the map. I have played several people who underestimated how fast I can close and/or get behind them. The same applies to the Cheetah. You really do not need the extra modifiers, but that extra hex or two in movement can really help your side of the tactical game. That tends to keep certain mechs at bay. Anyone who is vulnerable in the backside will always try to keep from getting flanked by mechs like this.
