Yes, I'm still using Mechwarrior 3rd edition.
I had an idea for a campaign in which the party is a bunch of rookies; as far as the life paths go, this means "first official bit of stage 3 in a training cadre (home-brew path) plus officer training as appropriate but no MOS training".
The first mission would be a basic training & familiarization mission in which the party gets one skill point in all of the Mechwarrior skill package, just enough to let them pilot their machines.
The second mission becomes a real-life live-fire exercise when the planet is invaded and they have to fight their way back to base.
Upon succeeding, the powers-that-be will decide that they've "graduated" and send them to the front so that their training mechs will be available for the next round of cadets.
As such, I'm looking at having it that only those characters who start out with the Vehicle and Owns Vehicle traits will start with mechs of their own, with everyone else playing as infantry until the other guys can capture something they can use.
The idea is to force the players into making some hard decisions about how they want to spend their attribute points.
Thoughts?
Thanks. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Wolfwood to a random cat (Trigun)

Dont feel bad, I didnt know there was a 4th edition.
My only complaint is the lack of worthwhile points you get during creation. But that aside I would give them all a unit to use but make them all light mechs. Since they will all be recruits they will be either 5/6 or possibly worse it may be very hard for the warriors to get off the battle field in the best of circumstances let alone having to worry about thier friends on the ground. _________________ Stinger If it's "creepy" to use the Internet, military satellites, and robot aircraft to find a house full of gorgeous young models so I can drop in on them unexpected, then FINE, I'm "creepy". I give everybody 45 total points to play around with, both for attributes and traits. This way, I figure, people should have a big enough pool to make some suitably larger-than-life heroes without having to take a whole slew of negative traits unless they want to go super-human.
As it is, missions 1 and 2 will see the party members w/o mechs in Stingers that belong to the training cadre. It's only after this that the ones w/o mechs are on their own, and even then #2 will potentially allow the party to capture a Raven. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." see my Feb 21 edit on my AToW topic for rules regarding cost of vehicle trait points. i think you could change them to accommodate MW3RPG character creation. _________________ "Okay friendlies, you're not paid to be exclusively a 'MechWarrior', vehicle/spacecraft crewer, fighter pilot, or infantry trooper.
