The canon concept for the Fireball was "Elemental hunter".
Thing is, the canon Fireball was armed with a Streak 2 and a machine gun, a load-out so insufficient for the mission that the fluff itself refers to individual pilots removing one or more weapons in order to make room for medium lasers.

As an elemental hunter, i would prefer to see SPLs or MPLs over 4 ERMLs. Those BA are getting very sneaky these days.

Thing is, ER Mediums give the pilot the advantage of range.
Few battle armor suits - and even most protomech suits - can match the ER Medium Laser for range, meaning that this version of the Fireball can engage from a distance greater than that at which the average suit can retaliate.
