All, In the coming months I'm going to have a BattleMech TRO submission contest. Probably give away $50 worth of merchandise in the BattleShop. Something that doesn't break the bank, but will still let you get a new BT book.
I'm looking to hash out how the deciding winners should work as well as the overall rules. I'd like to combine it whereby user reviews have a weighting and judging has a weighting. My thoughts are that once submissions are posted through the end of the period, points will be allotted based on your final review rating. This rating will be 25% of your total score.
The final 75% will be made up of scores by the judges. Now, I need to find volunteers for judging of course, but I also need to come up with perhaps 3 other criteria that can be judged, each weighing 25% of your final score. So, I have the following questions:
- Do you think people would participate in such a contest for the chance to win $50
- Is anyone interested in becoming a judge (this would not preclude you from entering, but you wouldn't be able to judge your own entries)
- What do you think the three criteria should be that are judged? I can think of (a) Fluff (history and text should be important) and (b) Design effectiveness (how good/effective is the design) and (c) ???
- I'm going to need to draft some contest rules, do I have a volunteer to help me craft those?
I'd love to get a conversation started here around this. Perhaps try to waken the place up a little. If the contest goes well, I'd even be willing to do it more often.[/list] _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

Hi Scott,
just saw this. What a cool idea. Count me in as a judge, if you'll have me.
I think you should definitely advertise this in outside forums. Get people to come here, see how awesome your Units section is, and how much interactivity it has with the forums.
c) Criterion could be how well the unit fits with what is intended of it. Fluff can be fine and well, stats can be too, but it should still fit any given factions' aesthetics. But maybe that's something to be folded into the fluff section.
If it's ok, I'll try to raise awareness about this.

Sure, you can raise awareness. Not sure exactly when it'll be ready to go. There are a few things I'd still like to do first before I open it up.
I haven't had any other volunteers for judges yet, so picking them will be easy. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

I will participate, plate is full enough that judging is probably not a good idea, but I can submit. _________________ The JadeDragon

Good to know you'll participate, though I guess I don't really need folks to tell me that. I think I'm looking for one more judge. Someone with enough time to review designs as they come in (within reason of course). _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

Unless someone else steps up a bit more enthusiastically (suckers), I'll count you as a judge. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

I also meant to participate as a judge. I should have stated it more clearly _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

I had assumed that given how often you review designs, you actually wanted to be a judge (sort of a natural presumption). _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

- Definitely yes. I would even participate without any giveaway whatsoever
- Yes.
- Fluff should definitely be one criterion. Effectiveness maybe is dificult to judge. The third criterion? Maybe cost-effectivenes? I don't know yet.
- Sure. But my online-time is somewhat limited due to a lot of other things i have to do in the near future.

Thanks. When I get a little closer I'll have a look at who volunteered for judges and reach out to everyone vie site messaging (hopefully everyone knows you can send site messages to groups of people now, which makes this exercise easier). _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

Depending on when the timeline is to get this rolling, I may have the time to do some judging.
