==Overview:==
Reports of this unusual mech are sporadic, but alarmingly consistent. As such,
we feel it fit to include mention of it.
By all appearances, the Scalpel is a mech that fits its name: a light-weight
unit that can delicately enter into situations where sending bigger units
would be impractical and yet still do just as much damage. This mentality is
completely at odds with traditional Clan tactics, raising the question of just
who is meant to pilot these units; freebirths, perhaps?
The mech's most notable feature is its speed. Owing to how fast it is, it can
easily outrun most other mechs and many conventional vehicles. That it has
full jump capability only adds to matters, as it can clear most obstacles with
ease.
Additionally, the mech boasts a modest electronics suite, sporting both an ECM
system and an active probe. Given its mission, having the two together is
prudent. Whether or not Clan mechwarriors can appreciate it, hwoever, remains
to be seen.
Weapons-wise, the mech has a surprising amount of firepower. Its main weapon
is a chest-mounted ER medium laser, something that is reminiscent of the
Ostscout. Backing it up are three ER small lasers, two of which are in the
arms; the arm-mounted lasers are bundled with machine guns for anti-infantry
purposes. This combination of energy weapons and machine guns allows the mech
to do considerable damage should it get up close, raising the possibility that
this mech was meant to backstab targets.
Of note is the bundle on each arm. The ER small laser, machine gun, and double
heat sink are bundled together as part of the same unit, providing for a
spectacular cosmetic effect when taken in conjunction with the fins and other
details added to help the mech's aerodynamics. This helps to minimize the
profile of the arms, thereby making it harder to visually spot the arm-mounted
weapons.
