Ok, posted my previous story of forgetting to backup my HM Pro files...
Well, it gets worse. This past Saturday we got hit by a thunder storm while I was away from the house, and all of my computers got fried. Surge Protector and all. So.... I'll be missing in action for awhile and all of the things I have to post (which are on my USB drive thankfully) will be delayed. Look forward to my first stories on Clan Wolverine in Hiding soon, as well as some new designs. I'll get them up here as soon as I can. Also Mordel, you may want to handle the headlines for awhile, not sure how long I'll be gone.

Today was the third time in three days I had to call my ISP.
I'd been having spotty access since Thursday, but on Monday I completely lost access until late Tuesday morning, with it being spotty ever since.
I called customer service on Monday. Guy gave me some run-around about how maintenance was going on and how the Monday - Thursday shift and the Friday - Sunday shift didn't really talk with each other.
I call again yesterday. Different person, different explanation. She forwards me to her supervisor, who all but promises to go chew someone out.
Today, I decided to go straight to calling the repair service. In 20 minutes I got more information than in the previous two days' attempts. Apparently, some time on Thursday a construction vehicle collided with one of the relay boxes that the ISP was using, damaging the box. They got it fixed on Tuesday, only to discover that the fiber-optic cables leading from the box to the sub-relays used by the customers had also been damaged; they're working on the cables now, but it's slow going as they're having to go customer-by-customer to figure out what wires are damaged and what are still good. _________________ "I wish I could write as mysterious as a cat." -Edgar Allen Poe"I knew there was something special about you, but I never realized you were really a cat." Well, if it makes y'all feel better, one reason I haven't posted in so long is because in February, we had a natural gas leak. I got out of the tub, dried off, switched off the heater and . . .
Kaboom. Flattened our house, and sent my wife, son and I to the hospital. They got out the next day with relatively minor burns and cuts (Thank GOD!) I got a 2-week stay in the University of Utah Burn Center.
Along with the house, GUS, my trusty PC got fried. I lost my website data, years of collected Battletech info, everything. And the kicker of it is, I had just backed up all the important stuff up. Yep, had the disks sitting right there on the desk next to my monitor.
The moral of the story: back up your data and put it someplace fireproof.
Before it sounds too much like a pity party, I'd like to point out some of the many things that went right:
Our Sheriff's Department only has a deputy in that end of the county every other day. This happened to be the day. He was 90 seconds away.
I got burned a lot, but only 1st and 2nd degree stuff. I saw a lot worse in the hospital.
My son was pinned under a foot of rubble. My wife somehow landed on top of everything and was able to pull him out.
In all this, my cell phone started to ring. I was able to reach it, and give it to my wife who was able to call the neighbor for help. We DID try 911, but when everyone in an 8-mile radius calls in at once, the system clogs up. Ironically, they updated it 3 weeks later.
We had just had our driveway plowed. This made it possible for rescue people to get right to the house instead of having to slog through 3 and 4-foot drifts. Ironically, we had it plowed to have our natural gas tank filled.
My brother was 2 hours from the burn center. He actually beat life flight there.
I healed up and was back at work in 2 months. A few scars, a little jumpy around propane tanks, but other than that, I'm doing good.
And we're rebuilding our house. Lots of people donated clothes, toys, books, dishes, food, diapers, (someone even sent me an orange shirt with little black flaming skulls on it. I laughed, but couldn't wear it). Several people found out all my firearms got fried, and donated replacements.
So yeah, it was not fun, but it taught me a lot.

OH. MY. GOODNESS....
Having a house blow up around you and your family certainly puts things into perspective, right?
So, instead of condoling you on your computer (in itself really part of any human being, right), I am going to say: congrats on your wonderful fortune!! Your family wasn't hurt badly and they seem to have patched you up, too. _________________ "Rear armour is defeatist!" - unknown Kuritan Mechwarrior

Hey ralgith, let me know when you're back. Funny thing is, when I decided to rejoin the BT community, I sent you 3 documents for your CBT-List website. Before having come here and reading above message.

You know, it really does. I really got to see the good side of people.
It was a true learning experience.
Heck of a way to get a new house, though.

Storm,
I'm glad you're ok!!! We have natural gas at our house too although we don't have a tank, it's piped in on an "as needed" basis. Anyways, glad to see you and the family are doing well! _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator
