The Pinnacle? I would say the original TRO 3025 was the high point...but that is my opinion...
As for later stuff... it's hard to say...really hard as you can find decent stuff in all of the TROs and at the same time find stuff that can be called bad or very poor. _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

I'm not sure about the MW4 (I never saw it in action), but the 3rd edition box was situated to lostech era. Not all fancy electronics were available _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Well nowadays you can get MechWarrior 4 Vengeance + Black Knight or MechWarrior 4 Mercenaries for $9.99 each at your local electronics store. Same with MechCommander 2 but I don't really care for that game.

The 3060 Clan vehicles were some of the worse designed vehicles ever that violate design principles for armored tanks on a regular basis!!
The Shamash looks really cool but what does the driver see if he looks out of the front window??? His own turret!!
The Asshur will loose his front fins to any uneven terrain!
The Zorya seems to pull a wheeled trailer!
The Ares will be more of a plowing machine than of a tank!! (see SD)
The Hachiman has a much too high silouette: Easy to hit and with a dangerous high center of gravity!
Same for the Ku, every modern tank will have a sillouette as small as possible!
Same for the Ishtar, that seems to be in danger of capsizing any time it breaks!!
The Athena seems to have totally fixed gauss rifles! How will it be able to aim?
Everything that seem to count is an interesting look! _________________ Reality is where the Pizza-man comes from!'Gucken, petzen, verpissen!' The Athena like certain SPG examples of which include the StuG vehicles of WW2 or the ASU series of vehicles the Russian use, would have to move the entire vehicle to aim the guns. But wait...we are forgetting the picture and fluff are meaningless to the BT universe so the item or unit can look ridiculously silly but since it's appearance doesn't matter then it can look that way... _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato

Even this vehicles could move their gun vertically and (in a very small bracket) horizontally. So they only had to "aim" the vehicle by pointing it roughly into the targets direction. The Athena won't be able to target anything nearby as its upwards pointed gauss rifles can only fire in a strongly ballistic curve, despite being direct fire weapons.

Thats why i criticise the art and not the actual performance in play! _________________ Reality is where the Pizza-man comes from!'Gucken, petzen, verpissen!' IMO worst designs ever are Protomechs from TRO:3060. Those look *worse* than stuff from Power Rangers. Roc is probably the only one of them looking at least somewhat acceptably. _________________

I also have the old BattleTech box with the Warhammer on it and it has the same look - realistic, utilitarian, and tough. Although I never understood why it had a searchlight though, you would think an advanced war machine with a fusion reactor and lasers would be equipe rwith something better than an electric light bolted to it's shoulder... |
Ah, yes, the infamous spotlight rules... well, is noit a searchlight. In Battletech 3025, the technology for sophisiticated passive infrared sensors, known as thermal imaging, had been lost, so 'Mechs were dependant for night vision on passive infra red . Some mechs had active infrared spotlights, the Warhammer the best known.
Anyway, it does look cool at least. _________________ Memento audare semper

Since the protomechs were meant to look this way... I think that this would disappear under real circumstances soon after the armies get used to seeing protomechs on field and the psychological effect wears away. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

As very small Warriors bread from the clan-aerospace-pilots-"series" sit in its torso in a embryo-like position (One of the problems the IS will not resolve in the foreseeable future to field Protomechs on their own!) the designers of this Protomechs are free to give them the appearance they wish as long as there is enough space for a tiny pilot!
The Smoke Jaguars design started a tradition among the clans how Proto's have to look like and with the clans strong obsession regarding traditions i don't think that this will change for a long time. _________________ Reality is where the Pizza-man comes from!'Gucken, petzen, verpissen!' Well, some general tradition won't go, but I doubt that the scientists would always bother with blending sensors to elaborate masks. Waste of materiel is also shunned by clan scientists. The artists however aren't clan scientists... _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!

Though the scientists would prefer more streamlined designs better suited for mass production i think the actual warriors will rip their heads off if confronted with a "not-cool-looking" Proto

So these dorky-looking heads were meant to scare the enemy? That seems a bit weird considering no clan Mech or BA ever had similar "scaring" features. As Smoke Jaguars were out of resources at that point, I really doubt they would be spending resources on something like that. IMO protomechs would probably look like smaller versions of Urbanmechs - walking trashcans. _________________

Or larger versions of the standard Battlearmor suit...but hey come on now the animal looking designs are just so cool to paint! It's a great way to get that fanasty element into the game... _________________ Karagin Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato
