Okay, I know everyone here has their own opinion on this one so...(Yes I know this is repeat...)
What would happen if say back in 3028, the CapCon had fully fallen to the FedSuns?
What would have been the ripples from that? How would Marik and Kurtia react? How would the minor powers like the Periphery nations react? How would Hanse's ally Katarina react? Also how would ComStar react over this? Would the AFFC be bogged down in a long and protracted guerrilla war?
Would there be a war in 3039? Would we see the rise of the FRR? Would the Clans return have been stopped sooner or would things be the same currently minus the Laio parts?
Okay working with above question please post what you think would be the reaction of the rest of the Inner Sphere and what gains would be gotten by House Davion and the fledling Fed-Com from this.

Well, if the CapCon fell, there wouldn't be much of a difference. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

How so? The loss of even the CapCon I think would have major repercussions all arcoss the Inner Sphere, personally I think it would shake the other leaders right down to their bones, since they would be thinking, even if they didn't want to admit it, that if it happen to the CapCon it could quite possiblly happen to my house and nation...
I think Marik more then anyone would be the one worrying about it a lot. Since he would have the Fed-Com sitting on his entire border without a buffer state between him and a larger chunck of it.

My implication was that I personally feel that the CapCon is a very small and insignificant house. I think they amount of "land" that they own makes them weak. They own a sliver. I honestly think that if any other house really WANTED that sliver, they could take it.
The only problem is the other houses won't let them. This is why the CapCon is still in existence. Not because they are powerful, or even significant, but because they are so small someone usually jumps to their aide. _________________ Mordel Blacknight - Site Administrator

If the Cappellans had been fully defeated in the 4th War, ComStar would have interdicted the Federated Suns long enough for the Combine to destroy them. The Lyrans would also be interdicted unless Katrina pulled her realm from the alliance with the Suns. The FWL would take advantage of the Lyrans while they wre interdicted, and also would likely swing over into FedSuns space to hit the former Capellan worlds, and maybe drive even further. Then, when the Combine and the FWL got too big, ComStar would find an excuse to interdict them also, making sure that everything would fall apart, choas would erupt, and then ComStar would step in and save Humanity. That is what Primus Waterly wanted, and she almost succeeded.
The reason why no one (other than Hanse Davion) ever tried to eliminate the Capellans is because they knew that their lack of territory was their advantage: they could concentrate their units better, and had shorter lines of supply. All of the other Houses barely had enough units to hold what they currently had, and could not afford to send enough troops to take the Capellans. Hanse had to use militia units and leave many interior worlds stripped of all but minimal garrison troops just to get the numbers that he needed for his attacks. The only reason why he had the success that he did was because of inside intelligence, smart strategy (concentrating his forces into overwhelming strength at weak targets, while bypassing stronger targets, etc.), and better politics (encouraging Ridzik to break away, formenting rebellions in the FWL to keep them out of things, and best of all, uniting with an economic powerhouse). Even with all of this, he nearly lost his realm through the interdiction and the sheer economic cost of the whole thing. He had intended to take on the Combine immediately after, but teh casualties he suffered forced him to postpone his attack until 3039, which turned out to be too late since it had given the Dracs time to rebuild their own strength.

Katherine wasn't even born yet. Melissa Steiner and Hanse would have taken HPG stations if Comstar attempted to make the interdict permanent. Remember Operation Flush? Takashi was too busy trying to kill Dragoons to worry acout doing anything to Davion space. There were enough forces on the Draconis border to make Takashi think twice, once he defeated the Dragoons.

If Hanse had taken all of Liao s[ace, the war of 3039 would never have happened. Hanse would be bussy dealing with stbilizing and consolidating the Liao March under the Allard-Liaos. Mask and the warrior houses wouls definately be carrying on a guerrilla war.

The reference is to the Original KATRINA Steiner, not Katherine who later took Katrina's name.

Stole, you mean. Hanse would have taken all of Laio space like a kid in a candy store. Driven them back to the FWL.

I'm not too sure an Interdiction would've crippled the FedSuns. Not with Hanses black box technology. And I certainly don't agree that the Combine could've destroyed them as they would've been fighting a two front war with Davion and Steiner. A lot of their later success in 3039 had to do with Tech and Mechs granted directly from Comstar, and that probably wouldn't have come to them in 3029

The inherent problem in the Inner Sphere is not taking it, but KEEPING it. Trying to absorb a whole realm and it's culture would've been near impossible. Even setting up a puppet regime would've probably failed.

If this had happened and the FedCom had been able to KEEP their gains, than Marik and Kurita would've had to sue for peace. Perhaps the Star League would've been re-formed with Hanse as the First Lord. A new age of peace could've been ushered in, and when the Clans attacked they would've been stopped cold. Their initial invasion would fail and perhaps an all out war between the IS and all the Clans would've errupted. Eventually age-old rivalries would return, once again throwing the whole thing into chaos.

While that is very true, Hanse would have the whole of two nations to draw upon to keep the Laio March in check and it would also offer an effective proveing ground for AFFC and would allow them to have move seasoned combat veterans then any of the other two remaining houses.
Plus when the Clan return the AFFC would be stronger and better prepared to fight them since they would know how to quickly fall back on the gurriella style campaign and thus would be more a pain to the Clans then they where.

You see, that's where it all returns to. Old rivalries would had caused the Houses to split anyway. It's Human Nature.
