AeroTech 2 Vessel Technical Readout
VALIDATED
Class/Model/Name: Dread Pirate
Tech: Inner Sphere / 2708
Vessel Type: Aerodyne DropShip
Rules: Level 1, Standard design
Rules Set: AeroTech2
Mass: 3,500 tons
Length: 136 meters
Power Plant: Standard
Safe Thrust: 4
Maximum Thrust: 6
Armor Type: Standard
Armament:
1 Large Laser
8 PPC
12 Machine Gun
10 Medium Laser
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
Upon hearing that Ground Zero Technologies needed a new dropship to
replace their old Leopard, Duke Blackwell waited long enough to hear some
specifications, and drink down some caffeine before gathering up some Steel
Wolf technicians and making some calls to Federated-Boeing to send him some
parts.
Wandering around in the Solaris wastes for a while, the Duke insisted
that "No, no, it's got to be here SOMEWHERE". Multiple hours and caffeinated
beverages later, he came across the rusted and near destroyed remains of an
old Buccaneer class dropship. "Well," he said, looking over it, "The only
thing holding it together are the bird droppings...and it was hardly what I
had in mind...but it will do. Get the trucks out here!"
==Capabilities:==
Built upon the remains of a nearly destroyed civilian Buccaneer, the
Dread Pirate carries a new military grade engine which can propel it to much
greater speeds, as well as reinforced internal structure and much thicker
armor. The weaponry on the Dread Pirate is mostly standard energy weaponry
that was deemed "close enough" to the old Leopard. It was also cheap, as there
were lots of surplus PPCs and machine guns lying around. The Duke later
justified the machine guns as being able to shoot down incoming capital scale
missiles.
The inside of the Dread Pirate is rather interesting. The massive cargo
space of the old Bucaneer has been completely done away with, and six
combination 'Mech and vehicle bays have been installed. The bays are capable
of servicing or dropping either 'Mechs or vehicles, but can only hold one or
the other at a time. Behind that section is a small fighter compartment which
holds a lance of aerospace or conventional fighters. This left very little
cargo space, but the Duke just shrugged. "Eh, you get what you pay for."
Given its history as a rotting hulk out in the Solaris dessert, it is
unknown how well the Dread Pirate will perform under fire, but after a few
weeks work, the technicians from the Steel Wolves, Federated-Boeing and
Beckwood were able to get it safely spaceborne at a fraction of the cost of a
new ship.
==Deployment==
The only current Dread Pirate has been offered to GZT at a massive
discount for, quoting the Duke, "uspecified favors to be rendered later." The
design has also been sent to Comstar, who seem intrigued by the idea of a six
'Mech dropship carrier, but are a little leary given the haphazard design and
construction of the prototype. No doubt they will be closely watching the
original to see how it holds up, given that it is the "worst case" scenario
for not only having been abused, but for the expected future abuse.

I am the dwead piwat woberts! Wun for your wives, I have come for your souls!
Sorry, couldn't resist. Price is right. Looks pretty good. First time a mech drops through the deck unexpectedly, I am sending the regiment afer you, though. GZT will give it a try. I will have the trainies put it through the paces. Got a "milk run" (yeah, Right) coming up soon. _________________ one by one the rabbits are stealing my sanity....

I'll see your regiment and raise you a battalion of mercenaries and the support of the AFFS who wouldn't like one their nobles being attacked.
Silly one upsmanship aside, I'm glad you like it though. Simple, low-tech, but it does the job. And if you decide you need to haul vehicles later, it does that too. Little cargo room though, so be careful how long you expect to take it out for.

Mark Stonkin watched as the Dread Pirate Roberts (the name affectionately given o the new Dread Pirate dropship) performed complex maneuvers, swing around and swoop in close to the ground, where as passing six medium mechs disembarked, using their jumpjets to cushion their impact. As soon as the mechs had left the bays, and before they hit the ground, the huge aircraft was already lifting back into the sky. " How does it handle, Fennel." “Like a brick" was the static filled reply. Mark looks over that the comm officer." Do what you can to get that vox cleaned up. I don't want to lose communications during a drop." He then changed channels to communicate with the techs in the mech bays." Any signs of stress?"
One tech answered back" Can you have the pilot STOP ALL THAT G--DAM--D Dancing around, and we might be able to che--!". Stonkin switches back to the pilot" Tone it done a bit, crazy woman. The techs are about to retch all over the inside of my new dropship. I can't have that now. If they do, you clean it up." “Alright, Alright. Tell the babies not to lose their diapers. I'll slow it down a bit. Sheesh, everybody’s a traffic cop." was the reply. The Pirate was in a steep climb, when two doors opened, one on either side, and out shot two aerospace fighters. “She’s a mad woman, deploying fighter cover like that” someone behind Stonkin whispered. Mark just smiled at the comment. He had been on the mech side of a drop with Fennel piloting before.” You just don’t fly a dropship like that. It isn’t a fighter.” Mark replied to the speaker this time” She does. That’s why I hired her.” Then into the comm unit.” Fen, bring her in. I like what I see. I think we have a winner this time.”

Actually, they can. As point defense they can lower the attack value of incoming captial ship missiles. At least, I recall they could...maybe that was back in the battlespace days.

Point and AMS weapons reduce a single missile attack by 1/2 of their damage value. So a SPL reduces a missile attack by 0.15 points.
Against Naval Missiles, every full point of Point Defense adds a +1 to the missiles to-hit roll.
Point Defense have a range of 1 hex and can fire on any missile that would pass through a defended hex even if that missile is targeting another ship.

your not allowed to produce a design from my thoughts!!!! lol.
We seem to have had very similar thoughts here CO. I hadn't noticed that you used a Buccaneer until i re-read your fluff, lol. Great minds right?

Well, wouldn't be the first time. Remember the 'Mech rifles?
That being said, seemed a natural choice...bigger than the Leopard, smaller than the Union, still aerodyne, and easy to get a hold of.
It also suggested a cheesy name for itself right off to bat. ^.^
