Contract #908-56 Vehicle Infantry Fighting
To all compaines and private groups:
The SLDF is looking for an Infantry Fighting Vehicle that can keep up with other armored units and mechs, can carry both unarmored and armored infantry in the platoon size element.
The vehicle must have one missiles system on it and should have enough armor to with stand at least two Gauss hits per side if not more.
With current after action reviews coming in, the need has also risen for either a C3 Slave system or the Improved C3 system to be mounted on the vehicle.
Price must be kept at 4 million C-bills.

I think this fulfills all requirements, but I can't recall whether or not this is enough infantry space. Knock off some armor if you really want a C3i.

Wasteful maybe, but then again not everything is going to be tweaked to the point that is prefect and that fits to how my group plays.

Well, I have something, but it needs to be run through HMVee, or something.
Langusta APC
45t wheeled chassis with fusion engine and 9t of FF armor (35/32/30, turret 32). The weapon suite consists of LRM-5 launcher and Large Laser, both turret mounted. 6t infantry bay and C3 slave unit are included.
A hovercraft of similar parameters would also be possible.

A little late and it only meets the basic requirements. I wanted something that may seriously boost the firepower of an infantry platoon / BA squad, so I built it with the laser from the beginning. Would you mind lower speed than 5/8? With 4/6 it may be more serious threat, but keeping up with mediums and lights may be a problem... (that's why I chose this size of vee, well DS bay size had it's role too).
To Rudel: The cooperation of Schwerfer Industries GmbH and Dragon's Lair design studio s. r. o. bore some fruit again! (Wuzzah! And thanks for conversion.)

==Overview:==
When the call by the SLDF went out calling for the design and production of a
Infantry Fighting Vehicle that would be used to support unit maneuvers with
infantry support Diadoji Weapons and Armor took up the challenge.
==Capabilities:==
The design concept demanded an inexpensive yet sturdy design capable of moving
around a platoons worth of infantry and provide that infantry with fire
support and protection. DWA who has had several years' worth of practical
design and production of combat vehicles for House Davion, House Liao, and the
Five World Republic set about designing a vehicle to meet the SLDF's
specifications. With their long experience in using the Omni modularity
design concept to aid them, DWA laid out the basics of the chassis that would
form the core of their design. In the end three chassis concepts were worked
on with all of them sharing similar angles and lines in the chassis internal
configuration. In fact, the only alteration between the three was the
placement of the engine and drive components to accommodate the equipment for
wheeled, tracked, and hover propulsion.
Once the chassis prints were finished and proper projected balance was
achieved on the drive components the DWA teams dove into their engineering
software with a great resolve. The team knew that they needed a spacious
infantry bay capable of handling with as little modification as possible both
foot infantry and powered armor. Further more, they needed a turret assembly
and system powerful enough to house the desired weaponry. Many hours where
spent moving the various internal control and combat systems around in order
to find the most spacious fit possible to maximize foot space while not
jeopardizing the mission profile. It was decided that the crew would be
placed in a rather odd configuration with the driver being placed forward and
right of the designs centerline in a cockpit setup much like a fighter pilots
and given an increased view of the battlefield through the use of a canopy
rather reminiscent of those seen in the old Terran Star Wars movies TIE
Fighter. The vehicles gunnery is placed to the left of the driver in a seat
arrange slightly further aft then the pilots do to the slope of the nose armor
and facing towards the rear. The vehicle Commander and Engineer are located
just above and behind the pilot each facing inward with the Commanders
position overhanging the electronics of the gunner. This placed the crew in
roughly the first third of the vehicle leaving the middle third for the
infantry bay and turret mechanics.
Once these critical elements were placed and configured within the various
chassis and simulations had been run to insure that the chassis was properly
balanced DWA began work on the weapon pods and turret systems. These systems
and design techniques were vary familiar to DWA who has designed and produced
no less then four previous vehicles that employed modular construction
techniques. It was decided by the design team that DWA would equip and
produce the factory model with a rather light weapons package in the way of a
four tube streak short range missile launcher and 20mm rotary anti-infantry
machine gun. While these weapons offered little in the way of offensive
weaponry DWA decided on building the vehicles as a scout and infantry support
vehicle. As such, the vehicle was further equipped with a active probe to
augment its sensors and a C3i coordination system which was requested by the
SLDF contractor. These electronics are run and operated by the vehicles
Engineer who sits behind the pilot in the heart of the unit's computer
system.
After assembling the weapon modules and installing the equipment, DWA had one
final job at which to perform: the placement of the armor platting and
internal infantry bay. The contract from the SLDF called for armor platting
that was nearly 30mm thick as to provide adequate protection for the unit's
crew and infantry. However, this meant that a large part of the unit's weight
was caused by its armor plating, which measured nearly 20 percent on certain
variants. This was one of the key factors that limited the vehicles offensive
weapon systems. In addition to the thick plating, a CASE system was installed
within the turret and aft assemblies to prevent an ammo explosion from killing
the crew and infantry whose bay is very close to weapons assembly, and as
required by the SLDF contract, the bay is spacious enough to move an entire
platoon of full equipped foot soldiers or a squad of powered armor with only a
few minutes needed to reconfigure the bays insides. For ease of deployment,
the design is equipped with two fast action armored doors located on each side
of the bay that offer the infantry within the bay two ways to exit the design
in combat. DWA was well pleased with their work as the infantry bay was
central in the SLDF contract.
In the end, DWA was moderately pleased with their results. There had been
many restrictions and conditions in the contract that had limited DWA's
flexibility in designing the vehicle; one of which was to keep the unit's
weight below 50 tons in order for it to be deployable by Dropships such as the
Fury. Initially, the designers had wanted to outfit the vehicle with a 30mm
rotary autocannon of the same design used on another DWA vehicle. However,
the weapon proved too bulky to fit within the DWA limits and so the shorter
range 20mm rotary machine gun was used instead. This alteration, however, was
never able to make up for the performance lost when tested in simulations
against other vehicles. Only every 1 out of 20 engagements resulted in the
design winning. This was the final element that resulted in the team's final
decision on making the design a scout and infantry support vehicle instead of
a mobile infantry combat vehicle. It is hoped by the DWA team that if this
unit should have to engage other vehicles on the field that armor support,
multiple numbers, and infantry support will even the odds of the vehicle
surviving. DWA President and Founder Shin Diadoji is spectacle that the
design will be deployed in such a way.
==Variants:==
Variant Specific Alterations
The DWA team in complying with the scout nature of the design built their
wheeled variant with eight independent wheels and a sealed chassis augmented
for amphibious operations that allow the design to slowly wade through
moderately calm water. This allows the unit to cross streams and move along
water ways when on forward deployment and recon that would stop any other
wheeled or tracked vehicle.
In contrast, the tracked variant is powered by four independently powered
treads designed to allow the design to traverse lightly wooded and rough
terrain that would stop a wheeled or hover unit dead. However, the heavier
transmission system required a heavier engine and thus the unit move slightly
slower on paved surfaces when compared to the wheeled variant while its
performance on open terrain is comparable. Further more, the configuration of
the tread system and the weight of the larger engine prevented the DWA team
from installing the amphibious augmentation and thus it was omitted. The
extra weight, fortunately, was placed into thickening the designs armor
plating to nearly 37mm average.
When compared to the other variants the hover variant is the most expensive
and technologically complicated. The variant is capable of nearly twice the
speed of the other chassis variants due to its air cushion and reduced
friction while. Further more, the system required an overall reduction in the
power plants output, and the weight savings was placed into increasing the
armor plating to match that of the tracked chassis. However, despite the
increased protection this variant was determined to be more at risk of being
disabled then the other variants do to the vulnerability of the air cushion
which had to be carefully designed to not impede the infantry's mounting and
dismounting process, and its tendency like all hover units to sideslip at high
speeds.
==Deployment==
Nine prototypes, three of each chassis, have been produced and delivered to
the SLDF for testing. It is unlikely that DWA will go ahead with the
production of all three variants without a contract from the SLDF do to the
cost of purchasing three different sized engines for use in the chassis. It
is unlikely, regardless of rumors to the contrary, that DWA will alter two of
its variants to incorporate an oversized 200 ICE engine that would allow DWA
to standardize the engines size for any non-SLDF contracts.
