Earlier today I visited a vendor that was selling what appeared to be factory over-stock.

As a part of it, the guy had a few boxes of Yu-Ghi-Oh cards for cheap. I picked up two boxes (a booster set and what I thought was a starter set); those, coupled with a set of anime character pencils, was $5.

The cards from the booster pack were 100% legit, and matched some legit cards I had perfectly.

However, the cards from the "starter" set were a different story. The cards had the Konami logo on the cards, but a different logo on the pack itself; sadly, I had to toss the packaging as mom doesn't like me leaving empty boxes around. The cards themselves were horribly mis-translated, although for a few I could still make out what they were supposed to be. In addition, most of them had a repeating sparkle or gloss pattern.

Are those cards bootlegs?

If so, would they be unacceptable for official play?

I ask as between that haul and some other cards I picked up elsewhere, I have:

Blue-Eyes White Dragon

2 * Summoned Skull

2 * Gaia the Fierce Knight (no rituals)

Black Chaos Magician (no ritual or Dark Magician)

A fusion monster that requires the Dark Magician (I've seen it before but can't place the name).

The grave keeper that was in GX.

Cyber Dragon (as seen in GX).

Two cards that each represent the completed Exodia, with three cards that I think represent components (head, right arm, and one I'm not sure of).
Toon White-Eyes

Toon Dark Magician Girl
and enough left-overs to create an entire deck.

Likely so, I would think...although the cards you had mentioned below are all super rare to secret rare cards which could explain the sparkle...

If they are bootlegs, then yes, that would be unacceptable...

The only two fusions I recall as needing the Dark Magician are either the Dark Paladin (spellcaster) or Dark Flare Warrior (warrior)...

One of the cards I picked up in that original batch was a legit Flame Swordsman.

Yesterday, I was at one of the local Dollar Tree stores when I noted that they had a large quantity of 1st edition Yu-Ghi-Oh cards... in Spanish.

Inside one of the three packs I picked up was Masaki the Legendary Swordsman, one of the two cards needed to create the Flame Swordsman.

Now I just need to get a Flame Evoker & a Polymerization and I'm in business. 8)

I also got a Moki Moki, a Human Wave Formation (in the same pack, no less), a Jiraigumo, another Earthquake card, and a bunch of others. Unfortunately, my Spanish is out of date and so I'm going to have to get a few of them translated since they use specific terms I'm not familiar with.

Running some of the ones I was unsure about through Google Translate. Some of the translations appear to be at least a little off, but I have a pretty good idea of what they all say.

Now that I've got some translations, it seems that I've lucked into some darn good cards.

Among them:

*School of Piranhas (nasty little monster I can set as a trap if I'm reading this right)

*Atomic Firefly (coincidentally, a fan character from an alt-con series I'm looking at uses a vengeance-themed deck; this is perfect for it)

*Human Wave Tactics (I can see this working in conjunction with the above)

*Shield Drain (I fully intend to use and abuse this one)

*Lady Vampire (ditto)

*Jiraigumo (same here)

Ah, Shield Drain, how many players day have I ruined with that nasty little trap.

If you really want to mess with somebody. add "Golden Ladybug" to your deck. all you have to do is reveal it to your opponent, not play it, revel it from your hand. and you get 500 points every turn. heh heh.
