A simple design a friend of mine suggested and I was surprised I hadn't though of before. Really fast hovertank, mounting a turret and 10 small lasers. Efficiency personified. Well, in some ways anyway. It does mount a more expensive fusion engine. But I made sure to use every single one of the heatsinks. Very much a specialist, but still deadly...anyway, enough of my babbling...stats!

BattleTech Vehicle Technical Readout
VALIDATED

Type/Model: Scythe Assault Hovertank
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3060
Config: Hovercraft
Rules: Level 1, Standard design

Mass: 50 tons
Power Plant: 265 Core Tek Fusion
Cruise Speed: 108.0 km/h
Maximum Speed: 162.0 km/h
Armor Type: Durallex Light Standard
Armament:
10 ChisComp 32 Small Lasers
Manufacturer: Beckwood Weaponry
Location: Ravenholm, New Avalon (FS/BW)
Communications System: Fox Cry 110 with Wave Amplifier
Targeting & Tracking System: Fox Fury 230 Dual Lock

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The Scythe Assault Hovertank is a strange design being produced by new
manufacturer Beckwood. Given the firm's relative inexeperience, and the
specialized nature of the design, many outside commentators have already
predicted the doom of the new company, and with it the fortunes of Duke
Blackwell of Ravenholm. The point out the far too aggressive use of his
stipend to fund Beckwood as reasoning behind placing new restrictions on
younger Federated Suns nobles. The Duke himself seems unconcerned with such
critiscism, although the whether from confidence or ignorance of his own
precarious situation is unknown.

==Capabilities:==
The Scythe is a new assault hovertank designed to operate in either urban
environments or in open plains. Unlike many other hovercraft which mount
internal combustion engines and short range missiles, the Scythe has an
expensive fusion engine, and a bevy of the smallest lasers produced. The
engine is a slightly cut down Core Tek 275, like that used in Dervishes,
Shadow Hawks, Griffins and Wolverines. Due to this, the engine is easily
availible and rugged and servicable, even after being cut down slightly.
The machine mounts ten ChisComp 32 small lasers in its main turret, to make
the most out of the ten heatsinks included with the Core Tek engine. From
close range, the Scythe is able to shred nearly two tons of armor, and
recommended procedure is that the Scythe should also charge the opponent as
often as is practical.
To help protect the machine from the charge attacks, as well as enemy fire, it
mounts eleven tons of Durallex Light armor, mostly concentrated on the front
to absorb kinetic impact. Depsite the fairly heavy armor for a machine of this
size, the Scythe is incredibly nimble, and capable of speeds in excess of 150
kilometers per hour. Along with the lasers and fusion engine, the Scythe may
be a good cannidate for guerilla warfare, provided the planet has enough space
for it to operate effectively.

Dangerous, but short ranged. Once the enemy recognizes the danger this vehicle presents, you may expect pulse lasers aimed at you... not to mention the other weapons which will always be at short range if you try to attack. I would try lighter (and cheaper) vehicle vehicle. Another thing to consider would be skidding. You would have to slow down or perform tight maneuvers to stay at range.

I\'ve yet to test it unfortunately, so the next run of tanks might be lighter. Right now, the main reason for the weight is for ramming of BattleMech legs. Here's a possible light version though... Half the size...less than half the cost... I'll run a couple sim battles and see if the ramming damage is worth it, but this is probably the better machine, I admit.

Difference of...

Scythe 1 Maximum Ramming Damage: 14 x 5 = 70

Scythe 2 Maximum Ramming Damage: 14 x 2.5 = 35

The Scythe 1 can cripple most 'Mechs with a successful charge. The Scythe 2 is more forced to rely on laser power, since two vehicles cannot charge the same 'Mech. On the other hand, with good maneuvering, you could charge from the side, and maybe get a specific leg.

It sounds like it should be an easy decision, but I liked the blunt force approach of the first Scythe.

to be completely honest, I have never used vehicles in CBT. would skidding effect hovers as well as wheeled and tracked vehicles?

Ramming may be interesting, but you are still restricted by terrain, so it may be useful only under certain circumstances. I would like how it would perform if compared to Condor or Drillson Hovertanks.

To Fang: Ground vehicles are affected just like Battlemechs, but I'm not sure what changes were made in Total Warfare...

I don't apply skidding rules to hovertanks usually (as a house rule). My theory being that since it's not touching the ground, the surface of the ground isn't really important. It hovers just as well over ice and grass as it would cement. Or maybe it should just skid everywhere? Would make a good reason to actually raise driving skill. *shrugs*

But house rules don't fly in tournaments. *chuckles* So I try to at least remember the real rules. Skidding on pavement for vehicles I think, or ice. Same as 'Mechs but damage is located differently. And VTOLs always have a risk of slide slipping. They just rarely hit anything.

Just imagine a 50t tank moving at 162 kph and then try to make a sharp turn without anything contacting the ground (= no friction). It's like trying to make a sharp turn with a car on ice, only more so... I think that you already saw it in news, and that was something like a 3t car going around 100 kph.

In Total Warfare ground vehicles skid on pavement at flank speed like usual but hovers and VTOL´s are subject to possible skids whenever they turn at flank speed regardless of terrain!!
(Just because they don´t touch the ground and cannot use that friction to turn!)

Right. That makes more sense anyway, so I guess time to get a start on using the Total Warefare rules now. I needed to train up the men on driving skills anyway...they can't parallel park at all...
