Has anyone tried these? They look really neat and I reallllly want to get them. But only if they are worth it. However, some of them might make awesome additions to a battletech game (especially the tanks and some of the infantry. Throwing Romanians into battle against the Clans might be a tad cruel however)

If I lived in Vegas I'd be dirt poor and couldn't afford to play!! Very Happy Casinos don't want to hire political scientists.

Silly Casinos. Still...i think pitting Romanians against elementals would be awesome if the scale is right Very Happy

I've heard of them, but I haven't yet remembered to head down to the Book Stan here in town to buy a pack of them and have a look.

However, they are supposed to be 15mm, which I think would make them bigger then a battletech tank.

Well, as luck would have it, I got off work a bit early today and decided to head to the Book Stan and buy some of these things.

It seems that this game is selling pretty well around here, a popular buy.

There are two starter sets, one is a starter set, the other has the rulebook and maps and a basic and set II booster back instead of the starter minis, which is the one I bought for $24.99.

You get a little sheet of punchout counters that say disrupted, damaged, destroyed, and one that says objective. The rulebook, of course, and 6 map sheets. The hexes are larger than B-tech, the game is 15mm scale or so. The sheets, picture a standard sheet of paper, now make it long like a legal document and that's the size. They are printed front and back and are thin and plasticy feeling, so they'd likely survive pouring your coke on them.

the units can be France, Nationalist China, Soviet Union, USA, British, or Poland. And Germany, Italy, Japan, or Romania

When I opened up the basic set I got a set checklist. 9 minis, and the cards that go with them. One of these is supposed to be rare, but I don't which one yet.

I got 4 infantry. 1 US Bazooka (1942), 1 British Inspiring Lieutenant (1940). 1 Russian infantry with a Mosin-Nagant bolt action rifle (1939, and 1 Italian Fucile Modello 1891, an infantry with a bolt action rifle (1939).

The soldier minis are of a single person or gun, the vehicles of a single vehicle. The soldiers are about 1/72 scale. If you've ever bought any of the esci/ertle plastic toy soldier sets you know what I mean. If you haven't, think about the soldier figures in the regular Axis and Allies game/Samurai Swords/Fortress America, they are the same size.

On the bottom of each mini, including the little round soldier bases, it has an icon for what set it is, the name of the unit, and a symbol for common, uncommon, or rare. The unit cards show this info too.

On the unit card is the name, type, point value. And the stats for speed, defense, short-medium-long rang attacks against soldier or vehicle type targets.

And the special stuff. For instance that Inspiring Lt. has a close assault of 7 against vehicles in the same hex, gets +2 initiative, and has Tally-Ho which give adjacent soldiers +1 to their speed. That russian infantryman has a close assault of 8, but he can't be moved unless he starts his movement next to a friendly commander. The Bazooka gets a close assault of 10, and that Italian rifleman has a lousy close assault of 5, but gets 2 extra attack dice for Bravado if none of your units has been destroyed yet.

Speaking of dice. Flipping through the rules makes it fairly clear you need a nice handful of six-side dice for this. Your attack rating is the number of dice you roll. You keep anything 4 or better, and you get a hit if those dice are an equal or greater number then the defense of the target. For instance, if the Russian shoots at the Italian, at medium range, he gets 6 dice. The Italian has a defense of 4/4, which I take to mean he has the same defense whether fresh or damaged. To hit him, you would need to wind up with 4 or more dice that rolled a 4 or better.

But after going through it again more carefully, I didn't find anywhere that actually says "You need six-sided dice" anywhere in there, nor on the box. Somebody goofed.

Each card also has some brief unit fluff. A sentence or two.

I got 2 anti-tank guns. A Pak-38 for the Germans, and a 6 pounder for the British. Both have a movement of zero. Which means they need to be carried by a vehicle that has transport ability (got 2 of those) or perhaps if that Inspiring British Lt. is with it, the gun can move one hex.

The guns both have the relocate ability of moving 2 hexes during the assault phase. So it looks like they can shoot or move, not both.

The German gun has a seasoned crew, which means a target that has cover is easier to hit. The British gun has fluff about Lance-Sgt. Baskeyfield who got killed winning the Victoria Cross by using his 6 pounder gun to kill 2 Tiger Tanks and at least 1 self-propelled gun from a range of 100 yards on 20 September, 1944.

I got one US Jeep, which can't shoot anybody, even though the Mini has an MG on a pintle mount. It can move faster when on a road, and it can transport one soldier. That 6 pounder gun is a soldier type unit.

Both that British Inspiring Lt. and the US Jeep are uncommon units.

I got 2 tanks. 1 US Sherman "easy eight" The rare unit in the pack. And 1 British M3 Stuart tank, an uncommon unit. The Sherman can transport a soldier, the Stuart can't.

The Stuat has ALL Guns Blazing, it can make an extra attack on a soldier after its normal attack is done. The Sherman has excellent suspension, it ignores the hill hex movement penalty. It has armor-piercing rounds, once per game you get the chance to score an extra hit. And it has superior armor 2, which says to score 2 hits on this tank, you have to beat the defense by two or more.

Don't know what that means yet, but the rules don't look at all complicated. This is meant to be for quick fights. The standard game goes 7-10 turns, depending on when one side takes control of the objective.

The Stuart mini is small enough for a Btech hex, the Sherman is a bit too large. The soldiers and the AT guns would work find, though the picky will note they all have round bases.

If you flip the Stuart over, you will see it has a hull. But the Sherman is a hollow shell underneath, though I notice the turret is secured to the shell with a metal screw. Both turrets can revolve freely, but not the MGs so don't try to force them unless you want to remove them.

When I opened up the set II booster pack, the other half of the this starter set. I got a US 3 inch gun, a Russian with an SMG, a Japanese Marine Captain (uncommon), a US 101st Airborn screaming eagles Captain (uncommon), a Romanian anti-tank grenadier, a Russian anti-tank rifle, a Japanese sniper that gets extra attack dice for shooting commanders, an SS-Panzer IV (rare).

And I got a JapaneseType 2 Amphibious tank (uncommon). Looks like a boat hull with treads and a little turret on top.

All in all, this looks like a fast, fun tabletop game and the minis don't look half bad and are already painted. Come monday I'll have to go back and pick up a couple of booster packs.

Oh yeah, other starter set, the one without the 2 booster packs, is only 12 minis.

And to field the basic, 100 point army for each side. You're going to need more than that starter pack. Collectable, you know.

I'd like to find the guy who came up with "collectable miniature" games and punch him in the face. What happened to simply going and buying the minis you want (Warhammer/Classic D&D/Classic Battletech style)? Heaven forbid you should actually find the minis you want.

Yeah.

The collectable part isn't so bad. The part of this one I don't much like is how certain people are buying crates of the boosters, taking out the rare one, and selling it on ebay for a lot more than that 9 piece booster cost. The rest they throw into a 35 dollar auction for about a hundred minis, but not rares among them.

Or for only 180 bucks you can buy a complete set from them.

Yeah, they're making a profit off it. But it just seems like they're cheating/destroying the concept somehow.

You have obviously never bought booster pack after booster pack trying to assemble a decent array of Swordsworn/Steel Wolves figures.

Well I may not have but who would be that dumb. The smart peeps went for Banson Raider or The white ones. Nova Cat's buddies... *shrugs*

I liked Axis and Allies war at sea more than the regular game. But that like the Star Wars space combat game went nowhere after one set so I'm depressed at times.
