My idea of an upgrade starting in 3067,in production just prior to the start of the Jihad. Specifically for the Taurian Concordat and Calderon Protectorate.
Take the original GRF-1N from 3025:
5/8/5, 152 armor, 12 SHS, PPC and LRM-10
remove the 2 "additional" SHS keeping 10 and convert to DHS.
Use 2 tons for 2 ERML: one (or both ) on left arm other in CT.
Change the armor to Ferro Fibrous giving us 170 units.
New configuration data:
5/8/5, 170 armor, 10 DHS, PPC, LRM-10, and 2 ERML
Feel like stopping there I could and be ok. Not the greatest "Upgrade" but decent.
I would rather continue on and add the following changes also:
Recast the Internal Structure using Endo steel giving us 2.5 tons back to play with;
Use 2 for an upgrad to the LRMto a 15 rack, and the other 1/2 ton for CASE.
Final configuration data:
5/8/5, 170 armor with CASE, 10 DHS, PPC, LRM-15, and 2 ERML.
Call it the GRF-2N in either case.
Wallah! One higly durable attack machine using only moderate upgrades. It Jumps firing both main weapons and builds no heat...zero on the heat scale
run and fire all weapons and you still jump to 7 on the scale. Not so great but managable. Minimum range for the main weapons big deal.
Hel we could even upgrade the PPC if we had to although I don't like it...it starts losing that Taurian feel it had.
What do you all think? Which of the 2 mods is better in keeping with the TC? The first could also be done in3065 using standard ML's.
I lile the second one better due to the increased size of the LRM and case additions. Just me I suppose.

SD,
Thanks for tossing it through HMP for me (I don't have it). Yes, it could be a field modification and I will probably make my fluff reflect this. Would you put the second version through HMP for me and post it also?
Thanks. The second one cannot be a filed mod due to the use of endo steel (it could but it would take the mech out of commision for far longer than any Taurian Commander would accept).
I talked these two designs over with Medron Pryde via PM last evening at BattleCorps, and he seemed to like them fine.
He had a version that was similar to my first one, but couldn't be a field mod (use 2 tons from 2 SHS removed for 1 ML and CASE and +1/2 ton additional ferro armor) that he had designed for use in his "Human Sphere" timeline. Out of respect I had to let him post it first at BattleCorps since he had created it before me and he RUNS a game.

I like the second try better, but that's no reason to leave out the first upgrade. Upgrading all serving Griffins with Endo Steel is not viable. Perhaps upgrade most of them to the first version and start the ES project slowly? Replacement Griffins come with ES, and any combat salvage brought in for a full overhaul gets the same treatment.
On the other hand, doesn't a switch of heat sink type require you to swap the engine? The cost is great no matter what.

No! The heatsinks are not fully incorporated in an engine and can be changed. A lot of 3050 upgrades do that without a new engine.

he means the generaly accepted concept that to change heatsinks, the present engine must be extracted and then refitted with DHS and then placed back in. Same engine or engine type, just refitted.

Yes, but many upgrade kits use XL engine, instead of ES to save weight. It's probably easier to replace the engine, or refit it with heat sinks than to dismantle and change entire skeleton.
So it's time consuming, hard to do, but it doesn't require factory refit, right?

Thanks again SD! I think that I will call the first one a field upgrade kit as you suggested and use the ID of GRF-1N-2 in order to differentiate the 2 models. I chose the 2N id because looking back through all of the available cannon models there was no "2" series and as the Taurians usually like the Ghost Bears are a "stubbborn, slow moving to change, group" I thought it appropriate to not fully upgrade to all of the bells and whistles available in the BT universe at this time. The next generation mods for the TC should INHO incorporate the ERPPC, and Artemis IV FCS after seeing thier effects on Battle roms with other designs and feedback from warriors and commanders of TC units.
So, which version does everyone like better?
