Just tossing out an NPC I created to see if anyone likes the concept.

Name: [none yet]
Affilitation: Davion
Gender: Female
Age: 24
Skills packages: Civilian Technician, Vehicle Technician

This NPC was the youngest of three and the only daughter. [Life Path: Blue Collar, High School]. Even though she was a prodigy when it came to athletics, her father made it clear that she would keep with the family tradition and become either an engineer or a mechanic.

She went to a technical college [Life Path: Technical School], but didn't enjoy being there and often cut classes. Despite this, her father (who was paying her tuition) made her take advanced technical training.

To make matters worse for her, all adult citizens are required to spend at least one week a year in some sort of civil service position, and with her luck she wound assigned to do her time in the military [Navigation / Ground and First Aid at a +1 bonus, all other Basic Training skills at +0; this was a fudge on my part].

She spent four years [Life Path: Civilian Job] working at a shop, but was eventually fired because she kept clashing with the other mechanics.

She then took her life savings and went into business for herself. She got herself a truck, and modified it to have an RV camper shell and a communicator system. She also got a large cargo trailer (in real life it would be referred to as a "toy trailer") and outfitted it into a mobile repair shop [fossil fuel generator, deluxe tool kit, noteputer, fuel stores]. She now makes her living going to the people instead of making them come to her.

She made a deal with the government: instead of performing actual military service, she established a retainer contract with a government-approved relief organization as an "on-call" mechanic for their vehicles. She's officially her own boss, but maintenance calls from the organization take priority over her private customers.

The party will get occasional assignments to escort the relief vehicles, and as such will occasionally run into her. She can be asked to help repair the party's equipment, but for a price. Alternatively, she may make her assistance dependent upon a non-monetary reward such as fuel, rations, or a tool that isn't available to civilians. Any PCs who develop a romantic interest in her will have to prove themselves by beating her in some sort of mental or athletic competition.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

I went back and actually found the paramilitary life path to reflect her time in the reserves.

-----

Revised background story:

This NPC was the youngest of three and the only daughter. Even though she was a prodigy when it came to athletics, her father made it clear that she would keep with the family tradition and become either an engineer or a mechanic.

She went to a technical college, but didn't enjoy being there and often cut classes. Despite this, her father (who was paying her tuition) made her take advanced technical training.

All adult citizens are required to spent at least some time as a reservist. As a result of a clerical mistake, she initially wound up working in an elementary school instead of working as a mechanic. During this time, she discovered that she had a natural talent for nursing and first aid. Her talent and skills became such that she spent some time instructing other reservists in the field.

Another clerical mistake re-assigned her to a security patrol, where her patrol wound up saving a civilian from some bandits. In recognition of her success, she was given additional combat training.

She spent four years working at a shop, but was eventually fired. Not only did she have frequent disputes with the rest of the staff, but she was often late to work due to oversleeping (which in turn was the result of her studying).

She is also saving up her money so that she can attend nursing school.
