Here's the deal. I've been reading like crazy trying to figure out the real advantage to LB-X technology. All that it really gives you gamewise is a -1 to hit modifier. You still have to roll for how many munitions hit but it spreads the hits around instead of thumping in one spot. I'd rather a double-tap from an UAC-20 ripping off limbs than a single shot from an LB-X20 potentially doing 3 points of damage per location. So here's the question: How useful are the LB-X autocannons when it comes to the game? If you ask me I think they should errata the LB-X effect as far as modifiers. Instead of a -1 to hit mod they should give a +2 munitions hit roll (plus 2 because that's what it takes to change the amount of munitions hits). I'm not ranting here I just want to know what people think.

It's just like SRMs for EVERY point of damage you have a chance to deal critical hit (rolling 2) or hit head (rolling 12).
You can always fire standard ammo (no -1 modifier) to make holes and than just pepper the opponent with cluster ammo (again hit to internal structure means roll for critical hit). LB guns also have better range, especially lighter models.

Exactly
A single LB-X cannon with 2 tons of ammo is a very potent weapon. A ton of slugs and a ton of cluster. Open holes with the slugs and your other big weapons, then make a lotta nasty crits with the clusters.

Or go the Thor's route...one big gun to open the holes, and the LBX to pour salt on the wounds. I prefer to have two tons of ammo though, so the autocannon can contribute the hole opening process.
I like big LBX guns, especially 20s, but LB-2Xs you can keep. You have the same chance of getting criticals with an Ultra firing at double rate, and do more damage.

Even in solid shot/single shot modes the LB's have a longer range and produce less heat (on the big guns) than Ultras. And you don't have to worry about jamming.
Sure, jams are somewhat rare, but they happen enough to make anyone think twice about doubling their fire rate. The only thing that feels worse than running out of ammo because of constant double-firing is jamming on the first round. Having a torso full of now-useless ammo isn't a great feeling either.

And think of the fun you can have if someone goes into partial cover near you! Every head hit deals one point of damage to the pilot, so you can possibly get a free mech that's taken no critical damage.

Exactly as awad says. LB cluster rounds are death to vehicles.
I guess you haven't actually used them in battle have you?
The LB-10 is a brilliant weapon for softening up an opponent. It has decent range, good chance of getting 6 or 7 hits all over a Mech or vehicle, which in turn means 6 or 7 chances at getting a critical hit.. your mileage may vary.

Depends on what vehicle rules set you are using. If you are using LVL 3 vehicle rules (which should be lvl 2 rules, they actually make vehicles useful) vehicles will become a MAJOR pain in the arse.

No, those vehicle rules should stay level 3....mechs are supposed to be "kings of the battlefield".

Hey even the "Golden BB" can bring down the "King of the Battlefield", I have lost a Battlemaster to infantry carrying nothing more than rifles, (1 point ct damage with a possible crit, and rolled 2 crits, both crits took out the gyro, 85T reduiced to battlefield salvage). We lost 20 Clan mecs to 40 Protomechs, (thoes bugges are the most unbalanced unit in the game now). So yeah the mech is still the king, but well played powerarmor and protomechs are much scarier than most mech designs now.

Use for LB-X? One word for you:
Flak.
-3 to-hit for airborne units (though not jumping 'Mechs). Much easier to swat down pesky VTOLS, AeroFigters, and LAMs.
Not that those get used much...

I understand about the potential for more crit hits. Here's the thing. I have an Hunchback mod I use all the time. I upped the MP and gave it an UAC20. People hate it because I run around making aimed shots at limbs. 40 points of damage to a leg or to a torso carrying ammo doesn't make people happy. I guess I just like the almost garauntee of dishing out 40 points of damage for 16 heat.

That sounds as if you always hit, always with both "shots" and never get a jam!
Aimed shots are very difficult (especially when you run around all time ) so you need a real elite pilot to do this in every situation (You have a targeting computer! Have you?). If you hit you have an 58% chance that only one of your shots reaches the target as you have to roll an 8+ for hitting with both!
And about making double-shots all time: You know that there is an 3% chance for your weapon to jam for the rest of the game so be prepared for the time when your first shot is your last! (Yes, that happend to me in a custom Centurion: First enemy in range, first shot with double rate, "klick", , )
