Ok, i got this mentioned in a bit off fluff absolutley miles back (someone gave me a huge timeline of the Battletech story) and on it early on in the story around 2025 there was...
"2025: Growing dissention within the United States over the energy crisis causes the Western states to look elsewhere for thier energy demands, particularly China and the far east, which have been embargoed by the Western Alliance. Going directly under the nose of the East coast, the governor of California begins trade with the Empire of China. The growing eastern influence on the Western US forces the East coast to intervene, sending national guard units to block the trading fleets. The Western government retaliates with her own troops and the first hostilities break out. Soon an alliance is formed by the Western US against the East, breaking away from the United States and forming the UWA? (I cant remember exactly, i think it was the United Western America/Allies).
The entire United States erupts into a massive civil war, while the rest of the world looks on as a former superpower destroys itself. The decisive moment came when a major Western thrust was stopped outside of Chicago, although the city was badly damaged the Eastern counter-offensive was swift. Ending the war after four years of fighting'.
It went something like that i havent seen it for a while. But the way it made it sound was that without the US and Russia, the way was paved for Chinese and Japanese domination which went on to explain why the houses of Kurita and Liao were so powerful and so Eastern Influenced. And why to this day the Western decendants have an unrivalled hatred for them (Davion and Stiener).
Really really strange, i haven't seen anything on this but from what i remember the Early battletech history has never been fully explained, so it could be either a third party thing or something taken out early on as the fluff is constantly changing (It isn't really nessisary for the explaination of Liao and Kurita).
Its just something i remember because recently i got into a debate with another player who disagreed with the whole US civil war. I found it a bit puzzling as ive always assumed it was common fluff. But reading into the history i see that alot of the original documents were changed by fasa because they were seen as controversial (From what i remember it was clearly portrayed that China was the enemy, manipulating the crisis in thier favour).
Anyway to get back to the point, it wasn't in the timeline i looked at recently, anyone ever heard of this or is it just a one off thing?

"2014: Second Soviet Civil War ends, Western Alliance formed"
is the closest thing to that that I have found anywhere in BT cannon.

The Mechwarrior Manual timeline (1986) has the Soviet Civil War, 2011-2014. By 2024 far from having a second civil war, NATO, the US, Japan, Eastern Europe, and what was left of Russia.
Next entry is 2086 with side mentions of a Mars mission in 2027.
No civil war.
Not that we need one to explain the mutual hatred between the FedComs and the rest. Three Succession wars and some supremely arrogant leaders can account for that. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."
