This is the first in a series of... well, way out there designs that I'm working on. At the moment, I have no better name for the series, sadly.
BattleTech Vehicle Technical Readout
VALIDATED
Type/Model: Blockade Mk I
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3062
Config: Wheeled Trailer
Rules: Level 3, Custom design
Mass: 80 tons
Power Plant: None
Cruise Speed: None. Trailer pulled by Tractor.
Armor Type: Jolassa-328 Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
2 Guided Technologies 2nd Gen Streak SRM 6s
2 M-7 Gauss Rifles
1 Defiance Disintegrator LB 20-X AC
Manufacturer: Various
Location: Various
Communications System: Kallon Secure Net
Targeting & Tracking System: OptiSight-12
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The Blockade was an interesting experiment in design. The concept was to
design a mobile defensive emplacement which could concievably hold a position
with only minimal support. The Blockade is designed to be towed into position
by a dedicated tractor with minimum armament but heavy armour. The most unique
aspect of the Blockage series is the fact that they were created as a joint
venture by the powers involved with the new Star League. That said, many of
the units that are delivered to the Great Houses are modified with surprises
for their potential enemies.
Several models were designed, each with a different combat profile and each
addressing different concerns. The various models of the Blockade are also
spread across the spectrum of masses, with light AMS and Anti-Infantry units
at one end and the heavy "assault" units at the other. Additionally, the
Blockade comes in both tracked and wheeled variants.
==Capabilities:==
The Blockade Mk I carries an impressive weapons loadout designed to blunt the
force of an enemy assault in order to give defending vehicles and infantry a
fighting chance against enemy battlemechs.
The Mk I carries a pair of M-7 Gauss Rifles, more commonly seen as the main
armament of mechs like the Highlander, as its long range armament. These
weapons are capable of disabling or destroying many medium and light mechs
with little effort, serving well to thin enemy assaults.
Backing up the Gauss Rifles is a Defiance Disintegrator LB 20-X autocannon.
Equipped with both standard and LBX rounds, this weapon serves as a powerful
blow to the heaviest of mechs and can clear the skies of enemy aircraft in the
blink of an eye. Turned against infantry, the effects of this massive weapon
are devastating.
The seconadary close in weapons are a pair of Guided Technologies Streak SRM
6s. The SRMs serve two purposes in this design. The first, and most obvious,
is to exploit holes in the armour of enemy units. The second purpose is that
of disabling enemy vehicles.
Because of the unit's immobile role, most of the armour and all of the weapons
face to one side, making it vulnerable to attacks from the "rear". The unique
design of the hull allows the vehicle to be used as a defensive position by
foot infantry, laying low in the various hollows created by the heavier,
enemy-faced armour plating.
==Variants:==
Several variants of the Mk I exist, most replacing the LB-X autocannon and the
Streak SRMs with standard versions of those weapons and using the leftover
space for either additional ammo or heavier armour.
==Deployment==
The Blockade is deployed in many major cities throughout the Inner Sphere.

Interesting I have actually been working on the same thing here latley. I like your weapons load out a bit more than mine though. My only concern is the armor is a little thinner than I would like to see.

I have also done something similar. in addition, i am working on my own version that opperates like yours. it is an idea that I have always liked.

Ok, I said I was working on a version like yours for myself. Well, I lied. I was actually working on 5 of them.
I call them the Portable Anti-Armor Bunker or PAB.
I used your idea and expanded on it. IMHO, the purpose of each design is obvious.

Incase you missed it.
The PAB-1C2 is a company command vehicle with 2 C3Ms and an Adv. Mobile HQ. The weapons are designed for versatility with an emphasis on Anti-Air and protection.
The PAB-1C is a lance command vehicle with a C3M and Basic Mobile HQ. The weapons are designed for support and front-line fighting.
Both of the Command Vehicles have the space to carry a company's worth of foot infantry who act as garrison and security units. In addition, each command vehicle is equipped with Drone Control Gear, and the ability to control three drones.
The PAB-1G is the first of the combat units with twin Gauss Cannons, twin Streak SRM 6s, and a TAG. The weapons are designed for anti-armor penetration with a nest of MGs on all sides to ward off enemy infantry.
The PAB-1M is the second of the combat units with three LRM 20 racks linked to Artemis IV FCS, a Streak SRM 6s, and a TAG. The weapons are designed for area saturation fire support with a nest of MGs on all sides to ward off enemy infantry.
The PAB-1AA is the third of the combat units with twin Rotary Cannons, twin LBX Cannons, and a TAG. The weapons are designed for anti-air support with a nest of MGs on all sides to ward off enemy infantry.
Each of the Combat Vehicles has the space to carry a platoon's worth of foot infantry who act as garrison and security units. In addition, each combat vehicle is equipped with a C3 Slave and Drone Remote Equipment.
All of the Vehicles have the space to carry 1 to 1.5 tons of supplies for their foot infantry for re-supply. In addition, each vehicle carries a Guardian ECM that operates mainly in an ECCM fashion in order to prevent the enemy from shutting down the network.
The base idea is that 3 combat units would be placed in a triangular arrangement within a set distance of a command unit at the center. These combat units would be controlled by this central command unit which would coordinate the entire group’s attacks via remote and the integrated C3.
The formation can be expanded to include 3 groups with a PAB-1C2 coordinating the entire network. This places a total of 12 trailers in the field with 9 combat units, 2 lance command units, and 1 company command unit.
Each of the PAB units is designed with an integrated infantry bay as one of the primary functions of the PAB is as a portable infantry bunker. This offers infantry a position of safety during heavy combat as all bunkers do.
Any questions?
Thx for the sweet idea McBride

Ok, the last ones I’m going to do for now. The PAB MK3.
This PAB is sold as a self-portable group of 4 PABs and a PAB Tractor. Designed as truly little more then portable bunkers, the PAB MK3 have little in the way of support weapons which were a key selling point of their bigger cousins the MK1 and MK2 PAB. Each 10 ton unit is cheep and custom assembled when ordered and offers an impressive 2 tons of Anti-Armor support weaponry in the turret assembly and 3.5 tons of armored platting. In addition, each PAB is configured with enough space in its cargo hold for a full platoon of foot infantry with the exception of the Field HQ configuration which instead has a command center. As with all PAB designs, this cargo compartment is specially designed to include the firing ports that are found standard on any modern bunker in use. These ports allow the platoon to fire on enemy units from the safety of the bunker.
The PAB MK3s small size and restricted support weapon capacity are an after effect of the designer’s objective of a self-contained unit. The PAB Tractor that is sold as part of the MK3 network is only capable of hauling 40 tons. This max capacity limited the size of the PAB MK3 to 10 tons. However, the Tractor is capable of moving the entire unit at up to 54kph which is not as fast as combat vehicles but will still allow easy deployment of the PAB units. In addition, the PAB Tractor includes a Heavy Bridge laying Unit that will allow the PAB MK3 to deploy in areas with streams or narrow rivers that would stop other vehicles.
Overall, the PAB MK3 allows a Garrison to move badly needed Infantry Bunkers too hard to reach areas at a very low cost in order to sure up defense lines.

My thoughts.
I read further into trailers and tractors, but not that much further. A tractor can only pull up to its weight in trailers. As I wanted to do at least one self-deploying PAB set, it had to restrict the weight to 25t or less. I started with a 25t PAB 3, but when I made the tractor I changed gears. I just cannot justify a 100t TRACTOR.
So I reduced the weight of the tractor to 40t and dropped the PABs to 10t, which was the lowest I was willing to go. this worked well if only in two ways: I got the tractor to pull four PABs, and I created a glorified bunker.
Myself, I wanted a 4t cargo bay so I could transport a BA squad, but I was unwilling to reduce weapons or armor. So ya, I got reduced to foot infantry.
If I was to buy a few of these, I would probably deploy them in the same triangle pattern I described for the PAB MK1 but at 1 or 2 hexes from central PAB. I would probably use 1 MG, 2 SM, and 1 FHQ.
Any comments?

I like the Mk 3 better than the previous "Monster-Trailers"!
I think the Mk 1 and 2 are much too heavy with too valuable equipment to use them as stationary (-4 to hit) gunturrets.
The Mk 3 is small, expendable, cheap and can secure a given area against light opposition.
Some suggestions:
Maybe you can reduce the infantry compartments to 1t per trailer to boost armor and/or weapons. Or you can design a 20 or 40t infantry compartment trailer towed by a second tractor.

Finally got around to finishing the second in the series, it's a very specialized 30 t design. Too specialized, actually.
BattleTech Vehicle Technical Readout
VALIDATED
Type/Model: Blockade Mk II
Tech: Inner Sphere / 3062
Config: Wheeled Trailer
Rules: Level 3, Custom design
Mass: 30 tons
Power Plant: None
Cruise Speed: None. Trailer pulled by Tractor.
Armor Type: Jolassa-328 Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
6 MainFire Point Defense Anti-Missile Systems
Manufacturer: Various
Location: Various
Communications System: Kallon Secure Net
Targeting & Tracking System: OptiSight-12
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
In the end several models were designed, each with a different combat profile
and each addressing different concerns. The various models of the Blockade are
also spread across the spectrum of masses, with light AMS and Anti-Infantry
units at one end and the heavy "assault" units at the other. Additionally, the
Blockade comes in both tracked and wheeled variants.
==Capabilities:==
The Mk II was designed to throw up a wall of fire to eliminate missile threats
to defensive locations in a city. To achieve this goal, the Blockade Mk II
employs 6 MainFire Point Defense Anti-Missile Systems.
When involved in a short raid or other short engagement, the Mk II utilize all
6 AM systems for up to 6 minutes of sustained fire.
In prolonged engagements, the unit is less effective, but can prolong its
onboard ammunition supply to last just over half an hour by running only a
single AMS unit dry, then starting the next AMS unit. This chain of firing
limits the Mk II to defending against only one missile salvo at a time, but it
is better than nothing at all.
Ideally the Mk II is partnered with an ammo trailer to further prolong and
enhance its usefulness on the field.

God I cant tell you how much I HATE seeing this kind of remark about a unit. NO unit is expendable, and should never be considered that. when you factor in cost of traning, and family pensions for the deceased, is the unit still expendable? As a merc commander I see no unit as being expendable unless its a DRONE, but at the cost of thoes I dont use them.
Sorry if this seems harsh, but every time I see oh its cheap and expendable in the same sentence I tend to get a little irritated.
(this is both a in character and out of character rant)

I like them they are all interesting, these are my versions, (no fluff yet, as I am not sure of thier exact purpose yet). I am actually not sure if its feasable (though looking at RL tractors it should be feasable.) The TomTom Tank/Tractor pulls the other 3 units into position and then moves to enguage or stays and formes part of a impressive defensive position. They are expensive (one lance worth run 48 million-ish Cbills) but using lvl 3 vehicle rules they are going to be pretty nasty to deal with. I figure they are mosr for City, Dropship LZ, or fall back line defense, Coupled with a couple mech lances (all equipped with C3's this could become a very nasty surprise.

I totally understand. It is annoying. however, i believe in this case that the statement is true. The PAB MK3 is a glorified bunker. it is not a true tank. its a mobile home.

Maybe you can reduce the infantry compartments to 1t per trailer to boost armor and/or weapons. Or you can design a 20 or 40t infantry compartment trailer towed by a second tractor.
|
|
To do any of those will take away from what the PAB is and that is a bunker. it needs the 3t compartment built in in order to handle a foot infantry platoon.
Unless some new rules are out that specificaly say otherwise, 3t is need to handle a foot infantry platoon. I know that it can be split into squads, but i have never seen an offical rule that says a foot infantry squad occupies 1t of cargo space. So in order to keep this near legal, I used the lightest infantry bay at 3t.
Besides, if you use the unit grouping I suggested, you will get 4 vehicles [5 with tractor] and a company of foot infantry [3 platoons].
Just deploy 3 of those groupings, and it is good for establishing a Field Base, yes?

two new PAB MK3 configs. Both are designed for Battalion Field Bases.
The PAB-3C cargo PAB designed to hold Battalion stores, and the PAB-3MASH medical PAB designed as a field hopital.

Right! A "fixed" unit of this kind is a very dangerous place to sit in!
The infantry can wait till the trailer is short of being toasted and then leave it (if it hasn´t left before!) but the single bunker crew member has a problem!
I think serving in a motionless bunker of this size will be very unpopular!
Commanders that deploy such defensive measures think for shure that the trailers are expendable as annoying as it sounds!

If you define bunker as a "shelter" for infantry you are right but as an anti-armor bunker it would only need some weapon(s).
See my suggestion about infantry-less bunkers as a supplement and not as a replacement of yours.

As both the "tractor/trailer-thing" and the squad-deployment are level 3 rules i would use both in this case. I know there is no explicit rule about the weight of a squad but i would leave that to sanity and reason.

Set in the right terrain a command-post with lots of MG and SRM and a full battalion of infantry will be a problem for your enemy indeed!
I didn´t want to talk your invention bad but only to show alternatives!
