Ok a question that may have popped up before, but i would like to pose it again!
Which war was the most catastrophic (in your opinion)? We have a range of wars that have swept the entire inner sphere. From the Amaris coup, the unification wars, the succession wars, the clan invasion and the Jihad of Blake.
You may notice on the poll i have split the succession wars into to different halves, this is due to the relative differences in the warfare and allowing to differenciate between the wars.
So here we go, which you think and why! There are many answers depending on views. Also as more of the WoB Jihad comes to light its becoming clearer that it actually wasnt as disasterous as originally thought. But somehow managed to split up the innersphere, but we will leave Dark Age and inconsistencies out for the time being!

Well before I answer your question, I have one of my own; "What do you mean by "the universe?" Do you mean the game as a whole or do you mean something something more along the lines of story terms?
Depending which way I interpret yuor question, my answer would be different.

It was the Jihad.
The concept was ill-thought out, and the timeline, nor the results don't make sense.

By the universe i mean the whole battletech storyline, from start to finish. Much like you would say the star wars universe, meaning everything star wars.

Well after giving it some more thought, I'd still have to say the Jihad. It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. They jumped too far into the future in an effort to press the Reset button. Two, I don't see it happening that way. And Three MOST IMPORTANTLY, they not only disrepected the loyal fans, they discarded them in an effort ot attract new players. But what good are new players if there isn't anyone left ot show them the ropes.
Note: Sorry if I broke board rules about this touchy subject.

As was said in another recent thread, DISCOURSE about the Jihad and such is allowed. Closeminded, arbitrary, or knee-jerk arguements on the subject isn't.

Well i guess this is my bad for not explaining it but i did mean which was more catastrophic from a civilisational standpoint. As in which was most crippling. Rather than which one made the least sense and messed up the storyline.

The Jihad was brought on by a previous disaster, namely the clanners. The Clan Invasion is the root of all evil, introducing unbalancing tech and prompting a spiraling arms race. The FedCom could have disintegrated anyway.
No clanners, no need to restart the universe.

Unification wars. You cannot build an empire of peace by force of arms. It worked for a little while...at least on the surface. BUt by forcing the pheriphery nations to join, no matter what, the fledgling Star League gave cause to the eventual demise of itself and also to the inevitable catastrophies that followed. Were the pheriphery realms allowed autonomy beyond the Star League, there would have been a toal and complete rewrite of btech history.

I found the Fed. Com civil war to be pretty bad, from a storyline point of view, along with operation bulldog.

I am still going to say the Jihad. No other encounter has caused a THE ENTIRE INNER SPHERE to disband and mothball its armies (which would never happen, BTW) and sue for sphere wide peace. It also changes much more drastically than any of the others (with the possible exception of the Amaris war.)

In terms of greatest loss of life, property and general discord the first SW was worse than the Jihad. The Jihad may have been horrible and tragic but it didn't REALLY damage humanity while the 1st and 2nd SWs effectivly knocked civilization back 700 years it's like comparing the fall of Rome (1st and 2nd SW) to WWII (Jihad) sure WWII may have killed more people (though in this case the numbers are likly fairly close if not in favor of the 1st SW) but the fall of Rome set western society back hundreds if not thousands of years, while WII pushed us ahead if anything.
We're STILL rediscovering stuff the Romans knew of 2000 years ago, much the same as the IS with the Star League.

Things the romans knew how to do included:
* The ability to move water hundreds of miles through their aqueducts, including (in some places) moving the water uphill.
* The mass production of grain. A semi-automated factory (powered by a nearby river) crushed grains into the necessary ingredients for the thousands of fresh-baked loaves of bread eaten by the city of Rome each week.
* The conduction of electricity through copper-plated lightning rods.
* The ability to make a substance that burns even more fiercely when exposed to water (Greek Fire).
* The ability to make free-standing structures that would, today, require advanced building materials and/or powered equipment
Not that this has anything to do with anything.
