Okay its a city fight. I just played it out and wanted to see what kind of opinions everyone has on this kind of match up in general.

In one corner we've got a Phoenix Hawk PHX-1.

In the other corner we've got a Blackjack BJ-1DB

The Blackjack is a solid Fed Sun's mech that has seen action against every other house at some point it will have run into the standard PHX simply because of random odds.

The PHX jumps farther and has hands and a definate edge at 90 meters and closer.

On the other hand the Blackjack has a decent amount of manuverability and better odds at 120 meters and farther out.

I voted for Blackjack this time. PXH has a little stronger armor and has better speed, but heat dissipation and two large lasers make BJ dangerous enemy. If PXH manages to close quickly (not too difficult thing) and few good initiative and damage rolls than it may disable BJ quickly, but otherwise BJ may wear PXH down while it will try to deal with it's heat. I think that terrain and quality of pilots will decide.

I voted Blackjack. While mounting a half ton less armor and also giving up 20-30kph in speed, the Blackjack has the same range and better heat dissipation than the Phoenix Hawk. As for the "definite edge" the Phoenix Hawk enjoys at 3 hexes and closer, I don't see it at all. At 3 hexes or less, the Phoenix Hawk can do 22 damage for a net of 7 heat. The Blackjack can do 26 damage for a net of 7 heat. 4 more damage for the same heat plus all weapons in short range puts the "edge" on the Blackjack. It'll be close but I think the Blackjack will take the match.

The PXH really needs a better pilot in order to win reliably. Heat is unforgiving, especially when you carry a ton of the most powerful explosive known to man.

Blackjack. The Phoenix Hawk runs too hot for an ammo carrying mech. The PHX-!D or PHX-1K would be a closer contest.

The longer I have played BT the more I have lost trust in the 3025 PHX. The complete lack of heat management puts it at a huge disadvantage. The blackjack while slower is a steady fighter. It can take a fair amount of damage for a 45 ton mech while still dishing out decent amount of damage consistantly in return.

I see all these votes for the Blackjack. One thing people may be forgetting is that this is a city fight. With the extra maneuverability, the heat will not be an issue as the p-Hawk can get cover and cool off. So, my vote was for the P-Hawk.

True, in cities the PHX may have an edge. I have noticed though that most players who love to pilot that mech get greedy sometimes. In order for the PHX to win this fight the pilot needs to have lots of patience. The BJ pilot does not have these kinds of worries. Whoever wins this fight will not look pretty.

Okay, Darkadder and I fought it out...

At the end of the fight the Blackjack pilot ejected. Riddled with holes and having 11 heat sinks still unbroken and an engine and gyro hit with a medium laser functional and 2 JJ left.

The pheonix Hawk was heavy internal in every location armour was nonexistant except for cockpit. But all weapons and heat sinks were functional.

Basically with a few better critcal rolls on the part of the Blackjack and a few worse critical rolls on the the Phoenix Hawk and this match has a different ending.

Mordel, your vote is always for the Phoenix Hawk.

The Blackjack has flippable arms containing 2 LLs and 2 MLs. It also has enough heatsinks to do something without shutting down.

Try again.

yeah... sure the Blackjack can arm flip but the armour is thin back there and easy to get to a vital heat sink or engine or gyro if you roll well. Which is probably the point is mud making.

Even so, it will still depend on the init rolls. For both that round and the next plus the damage results.

That's it. The PXH risks a lot by jumping and Alpha Striking. High pay IF it manages to hit the back, but it will take hits in return and also overheat by ten points. Besides, it can't put out enough damage to force a Piloting roll in the shooting phase. The Blackjack can... Lying on the ground in an overheated PXH is not my idea of a winning strategy.

I just think the PXH needs a very patient pilot. And of course, I fail to see exactly why a mech fighting in the city could not keep it's back to a wall.
