==Overview:==
The XM-81 was a unique specimen among battlemechs, in that it was the testbed
for the first production model Extra-Light fusion engine. The final phase of
Project Troy, the research initiative that resulted in Extra-Light technology,
the XM-81 shocked onlookers during its' field trials, where it not only
savaged an old Stalker, it was pitted in a race against (and narrowly won
against) a new, top-of-the-line Ostroc. This new 'mech had firepower nearly
unequaled in close quarters (met only by the Battlemaster, introduced over a
century later), and speed that was completely unprescedented for a vehicle of
its' size.
==Capabilities:==
By the time the XM-81 was built there had already been five prototype
battlemechs constructed with experimental XL engines, the XM-76,- 77, -78,
-79, and -80, each testing XL engines in various stages of development.
Thusly, most of the technological hurdles had already been conquered. The 76
and 77 had tested the new engine's ability to generate power compared to
standard engines of similar size. The 78 tested integral heat-dissipation
capacity, while the 79 and 80 focused on robustness of design and
ease-of-maintenance, respectively. The XM-81 was the successful blend of all
those functions, created to showcase the technology. It carried only energy
weapons to prove that the engine could generate enough power for consistent
use of high-drain devices, its' internal heat sinks were some of the best ever
developed, and the entire engine could be overhauled in just a few days, on
par with the less-sophisticated standard fusion engines.
==Deployment==
As a prototype 'mech, the XM-81 was never deployed into active service. The
only example ever produced was dissasembled in 2710.
