==Overview:==
Through examination of specimens captured in the FedCom Civil War, GM of
Kathil recently began production of the Federated Suns' own light fusion
engines. After the success of the engine and its testbed BattleMech, the
IVN-1A Ivan, Regent Yvonne asked that GM set to work on another, larger
project - a heavy OmniMech using the light engine. This OmniMech - named
Harbinger - is the first Omni to use a light fusion engine. Combined with
endo-steel internal structure, the light engine gives this 75 ton machine more
pod space than it could otherwise have, without the expense or vulneribility
of an XL engine.

Just as the Avatar is based on the Vulture, and the Hauptmann is based on the
Daishi, the Harbinger is also based on a Clan OmniMech - the Cauldron-Born.
Though the Harbinger is bulkier, taller and narrower than the Cauldron-Born,
the two designs are quite similar in appearance. Through the skill of the
desingers and a little luck, the Harbinger also shares the
near-indestructibility which gives the Cauldron-Born its name.

==Capabilities:==
Although not terribly fast, the Harbinger better is armored than its nearest
opponents - the Avatar and Perseus. Without the XL engine, it is also less
vulnerable to internal damage; the Harbinger's CASE equipment actually serves
a purpose in combat, as opposed to the Avatar's or Perseus', which simply lets
them remain salvageable. The Harbinger has no fixed equipment, instead
dedicating as much tonnage as possible to pod space. Despite the heavier
engine, the Harbinger manages 34 tons of pod space - just as much as the
Avatar, and only five tons less than the Perseus. Although the Perseus has
more pod space than the Harbinger, a more compact engine and more intelligent
distribution of internal components give the Harbinger much larger weapons
bays, allowing it to mount a wider selection of weapons.

The Harbinger's primary configuration is intended for general combat. The
primary weapon is a Rotary AC/5 in the right arm, paired with an ER PPC on the
other arm. A pair of Streak SRM 4 missile launchers and four ER medium lasers
provide the close range firepower.

The A variant is armed with a Mydron LB-20X autocannon as its primary weapon.
An ER large laser and Artemis-equipped LRM 10 launcher keep the Harbinger from
being out-ranged, while a trio of ER medium lasers thicken its short-range
firepower.

The B variant is designed for close combat, and carries two Streak SRM 6 racks
and a half dozen medium lasers. An LB10-X autocannon is the B's only ranged
firepower, leaving this configuration at significant disadvantage in open
terrain.

The Harbinger C is a fire support configuration, with two Artemis-equipped LRM
20 launchers and a few lasers for self-defense. The C3 slave lets the
Harbinger C lay down very accurate barrages with a minimum of risk to itself.
When a C3 network is not available, the slave unit is usually replaced with an
extra ton of ammunition.

Configuration D is intended for long term combat, or situations where
ammuntion is otherwise hard to come by. A pair of ER PPCs serve as the primary
weapons, and are augmented by a number of medium lasers and pulse lasers. The
D mounts a large number of extra heat sinks, which allow it to cope with the
incredible heat generated by its weapons.

Configurations E and F were both developed for combat in high temperature
environments. They use ballistic and missile weapons, backed up by a few
lasers. The E's primary advantage is the gauss rifle, the F is often chosen
for its easy ability to use special LRM munitions.

Nice work, I can't see serious flaws here and configurations look nasty on paper. Basic chassis is quite durable. I would leave one arm or torso without ES for AC/20s. Having AC in arm would allow those funny surprises with flipping arms.

I started out like that, actually. But the current distribution seems to better fit the way I prefer to arrange the arm pods. And it keeps me from having to put ammo into non-torso locations, which I was getting before the current arrangement. Besides, the RAC and PPC are still pretty good surprises. (Come and get me, Motown!)

Having to put ammo to non-torso locations? Why? There are more possibilities, like having one arm free and one torso with just a little space for small things. (having arm pod makes more sense, it probably won't be armed with HGR).

To A config, LB gun would be better in RT/CT. There is enough space for it and you cannot flip it as it is.

I just liked the way things worked out with this arrangement (overall) and decided to accept some of the drawbacks of it. I think that that's one of the things about OmniMechs: having crit-imposed limitations makes making configs more challenging. I like it, at least.

As for the AC in the torso: I prefer it in the arm. Unless I'm mistaken (possible), being in the arm still gives it a wider field of fire than in the torso, despite the fact that it can't flip it. And, honestly, putting a large AC in the torso doesn't fit with my vision of the 'Mech. The torso is reserved for missiles and occasionally energy weapons - like a Caulron-Born's or Timber Wolf's missile racks. It doesn't mean anything in terms of the game, but for me, a lot of the game is the image in my head. Just rolling dice on a map isn't nearly as fun without seeing the huge 'Mechs walking about and blasting each other.

I'll admit that your way might be more efficient, Dragon. And it might give a gaming advantage. But efficiency isn't always top priority. Otherwise we'd end up with hordes of munchy 'Mechs.

an LB in the arm is still alot more efficient than an LB in the torso.

The arc of fire is still significantly larger than a torso mounted weapons.

As for looks, let's just say the Hauptmann, Atlas, Hunchback and Fafnir won't look great without those big barrels (uhh) sticking out of their torsos !



It just depend on how your envision your mech's weaponary.

The firing arc is limited by the worst location where the weapon has critical slots. An AC that has even one slot in the torso is limited to the torso arc.

Having the ammo in the torso makes sense despite that. A CASE-limited explosion that takes out your torso will leave a nice salvageable arm for you to pick up instead of a cloud of scrap metal.

I know what you are talking about, do you think that I would allow replacing those SRMs on my Lightning?

I must agree that Cauldron-born-like mech should have big guns arm-mounted (thats why I would prefer having arms free).

For another variant it would be good to have standard AC, from those bits of info scattered around TRO 3067 (Morningstar CCV) the Davions seem to install standard guns because of special ammo they invented.
