Submarines are the same thing. A sub is a weapon for attacking surface ships? Whose surface ships? On just how many planets does there exist an opposing navy? And in how many oceans does a warship, with an oceangoing hull need to worry about getting shot at by a battlemech way down on the ocean floor? (and out of range very likely).

Don't know where you're coming from here, because I never said to use them to attack surface ships, or to engage mechs. I used them to protect an underwater installation on a planet that was 94% water. Was a fun scenario we had there, with a lot of wet navy assets. The reason I like subs is that they are small, cheap, and good at what they do.

The only place I can see subs taking on mechs underwater is in shallow water. Mechs may be watertight, but by no means designed to submerge like a submarine can. So a mech could only operate in shallow water, say 100 feet or meters? How many sub skippers would take a sub into that? Since, assuming there are subs, there would also be depth charges. At such a shallow depth, an aircraft could probably see the sub, depending on the waters.

In the scenario we played no sub shot directly at a mech, however we did have one (my opponents unfortunately) that was equipped with 2 Arrow IV launchers. That was a fun thing to deal with - not :/

Its like battleships. Nobody has a battleship in their navy any more. Why? No need for them any more. Smaller, cheaper ships can do the jobs that need doing just as well for loads less money and crewmen. So why would any planet build a ship with serious firepower when there is no opposing navy to worry about? Why would they build submarines either?
|
|
Most planets WON'T have much of a wet navy, if any at all. Except planets like the one mentioned above that are predominantly water.

If something were going to be built just to provide jobs, a savvy govt would build a tank or aircraft factory. Unlike submarines you can sell those to somebody. And adding such to your forces will do you a whole lot more good then building a warship or submarine would.

|
In no way would doing it for jobs make sense, I agree with this statement completely.

Patrol craft or hydrofoils, small ones, could be useful for coastal waters when after non-mech insurgents and such or for customs patrols. Or to patrol rivers. But get mechs involved and no matter how fast the boat it on the river its a sitting duck. And in coastal waters, they got to come back to port sometime and the mechs can get at the port most of the time. Or just hit the port with aircraft and blow up their munitions.
|
|
I love hydrofoils also, just failed to mention it in my post.
Ok, if your post I'm replying to wasn't directed at me (only assuming it was because you replied to mine), then don't take it as a response directed at you, but as one directed at the points you made so that people can see different views, and also have different options.

Just a general question really. Do they have a place in battletech at all? And if so how much should be spent on them? I am asking because I was playing with some of the 555 ton surface ship designs. And they are interesting but ungodly expensive. But the 100 ton 5c 8f 3 ppc hyrofoil was really interesting.

Hmm... ships, they would probably appear only on water rich planets, Solaris, ... where the would have two uses. Either patrolling and monitoring the activities of possible criminal elements, or adding to defenses of the planet. Important structures may be hidden underwater (like command center in Neptune fluff). Attacks on such planets may see the use of naval assets, but I must agree that only those ships that can be carried by DropShips will see some use. (Successor states may even have something like attack wet navy that can be carried in special DropShips). Interesting thing would be the deployment of such units. This would require landing near to watter and getting ships to watter or maybe using aerodyne DropShip with bomb bay large enough to drop submarine or ship while hovering above the surface.

Standard construction rules for surface vessels and subs are in BMR, rules for support vehicles are in Combat Equipment (I heard / read that they are, product list in CBT should say more).

Get your hands on Combat Equipment!!!
Forget about 555 ton nut-shells with XXL-fusion-engines!
Construct a 60.000 ton battleship with a fission- or even a steam (!)- engine and arm it with 12 Long Tom artillery!!!!

If I'll get myself to Germany, or create some kind of account (and obtain money to pour in to it of course) than maybe I will, but until then I'm forced to wait until local distribution brings some stuff (or makes miracle, if I'm to be accurate).
