My own rundown:
Episode One - Is barely worth mentioning.
Episode Two - Half-way decent movie. As a Star Wars movie, however, disappointing.
Episode Three - Better than Episode one, but that's not saying much. Still a thoroughly sucky movie.
Episode Four - Good movie. Establishes the fact that the series doesn't take itself seriously and is basically a stylized take on old WWI fighter and samurai movies.
Episode Five - Better movie. Takes the trend from Episode Four and takes everything a few steps further. Helps to impart a greater sense of scale for the conflict.
Episode Six - Best movie. Takes the concepts from Episodes Four and Five and takes the whole thing to the limits of easily-understandable scale and scope.

Episode One - No where near as bad as people say it is. Expectations were so high for this movie that the fact it was "just OK" turned a lot of people off.
Episode Two - Another one that wasn't that bad. Could have better in a lot of places.
Episode Three - By far the best of the first three. Stunning visuals make up for an average script. It's a story that everyone knew what would happen, and it was done pretty well.
Episode Four - Simply amazing. When you consider the amount of technology that had to be invented to make this movie the fact it was even made is mind boggling.
Episode Five - Simply put, the best Star Wars movie made. A great script with plot twists, and stunning visuals. One of the first movies ever where the "bad guys" win. Truly ground breaking.
Episode Six - Visually a great movie, but one thing ruins it--Ewoks. Not that they exists mind you, the fact that they took on a large Empire force virtually on their own and made the Empire look like The Bad News Bears. The rest is pretty good, that the Ewoks battle alone drops the film down a notch or two.

The Empire Strikes Back still holds top billing for me, but it's now followed more closely by Revenge of the Sith than by A New Hope...Return of the Jedi and Attack of the Clones follow next tied with each other, and The Phantom Menace is last...

I had to say ESB. I enjoed that one the best. The first one came out when I was just a tot so it was just a space movie, but twhen the second one came out I was a little older but still mainly driven by my imagination so it was highly enjoyable. The third one was okay, seeing Leia(sp?) in a metal bikini was cool, but Jabba was too muppet as was his sidekick.
Fastforward several years. Jar-Jar was funny, but was too big a player. Just knocked it down too much. Enjoyed all the jedi's though. Especially a younger Yoda and all the new driods. The next one was much better, it brought into the mix the origins of some of the characters from the 3 episodes I grew up with.
I look forward to seeing this latest one.

Yes, The Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie without a doubt.
Episode Three was a lot better than I expected from Lucas, and earns a second place just by that.

I don't know why so many people rate Empire Strikes Back as the best movie of all. The Hoth battle scenes are the best of the entire series, and the asteroid field chase is good too. But on the whole it's a filler episode.
I dunno, I am into Star Wars for the spaceship fights, not the Force or the lightsaber fights... so Luke duel with Darth Vader is not as appealing to me as other stuff.
I think Episode IV is the best movie, but Return of the Jedi is the most spectacular and the most intensely dramatic, being the climax of the series.
And I don't know why people dislike the Ewoks so much.. they might be a bit too much on the cutey side.. but I like the statement that they make, little people, too, can fight, and make their contribution in the struggle for freedom.
After all, modern technology is not much use against a primitive enemy using guerrilla tactics in a jungle ... as it has been shown. _________________ Memento audare semper

Episode 4 was a groundbreaker, and is my vote for the best in the series.
Episode 5 was a filler episode, but was very well done, and kept people's interest for 6
Episoide 6 was excellent, but rehashed alot of special effects from the first two. The Ewoks though should not have been able to defend against the empire.
My order for the first three was 4, then 5, then 6
Episode 1 was only OK. it wasn't nearly as bad as some said, but it was bad enough that JarJar Binks became someone to root against when he should have died a happy death quickly and painfully.
Episode 2 was painful whenever the two main characters were on screen at the same time. The two characters had as much chemistry as two rocks. The background story though was interesting and the effects pretty damned cool.
Episode 3 was a great movie minus the conversations. Again, Amadalla and Anikan just have no charisma together, but the background movie was excellent.
I'd rate the first two 3, 2, 1
Overall I'd rate them 4, 5, 3, 6, 2, 1

Why is it, that the movie that everyone says is their favorite is not the one that has grossed the most money?

Because mine came out in what 76? Grossing the most money will automatically favor those newer releases because it plain costs more to go to the movies now a days.
