These are the first line of defense for a battle group. They are the outlying pickets around your big ships, doing what they can to keep small craft (like fighters, dropships, and other Cutters) from reaching the big battleships, cruisers, and carriers.

Its a nice design. However, I question the use of a KF drive on a picket. Why not a defensive monitor?

Monitors didn't exist during the Star League, did they?

I'm sure Warhammer has his own answer, but. . .

Putting a KF drive on it lets you take it with you when the fleet is on the move (read "on the attack") . Otherwise it just sucks up docking space on JumpShips, which could be used for supplies or ground troops. It'll need a KF drive, one way or another. Having its own makes it an asset, instead of a burden.

Also, you could use one to scout ahead before the rest of the fleet jumps. It can come back on its LF batteries and tell you if someone's sitting on your jump point. And if it doesn't come back, that tells you something too.

Humph. While I'm typing my reply there are three posts made.

I never even noticed the date on this ship. But Warhammer's got a point, I think. No monitors during the Star League.

What kind of ships defended Terra during Amaris war? Were these drone ships equipped with KF drives? Maybe some kind of monitors?

It always struck to me as an oddity while no monitors were made during the Star League.

A ship that isn't commission for ntersteller combat doesn't require KF drive if it was just part of a system defence fleet.

Also a Moniter will be vastly cheaper than any other KF equipped warships which means more can be constructed for system defence, instead of warships.

The only thing close to monitors in the SL time period were the Casper Drone Ships and the other SDS vessels.

Also Monitors are LEVEL 3, some are non-jump capable and the ones that are NEED a Jumpship to carry them around, or a Warship, thus they end up being Uber-Dropships when all is said and done.

Casper Drone Ships, STRIPPED WARSHIPS that had no KF Drives.

Also please note that monitors are LEVEL 3, the ship here is a Level 2 ship that is part of the fleet and acts as out riders to AID in depletting the enemy attacking force, just as frigates and corvettes and other ships did in WW1 and WW2 and other naval battles. They engage the enemy vanguard, be it fighters or whatever, do as much damage as they can and then either die trying or end up playing cat and mouse with the main enemy fleet.

PT Boats come to mind on this one as an example. One could look at a lot of the fighting in the Pacfic in WW2 to get an idea of what Warhammer is trying to make here and in a space naval battle some thing like what he has in mind, would be around doing the job as he stated since it frees up fighters to be there for the main strike or to pounce on the attacking enemy fighters etc...

Againbst other warships this would be badly minced mint flavoured dog food but as a screen for a landing force to take on fighters or Assault Dropships it would be quite effective. I could see this ship performing the role of the WW II Corvette or sub chaser a small warship used for convoy escort to drive off or destroy Assault dropships and the like
