I had a match with a friend recently and he did something I don't believe to be possible. A Death from Above attack with a hatchet. He says it is a legal move but it was something that I didn't believe.
Wanted to know if any of you have heard about this plus I was wondering if Triple Strength Myomers would affect Death from Above and/or charging attacks.
Help on this would be greatly appreiciated. Thanks.

... Battlemechs may make only one form of physical attack per turn. ... (p. 39, old Master Rules)

Jump to the enemy and hatchet attack, or DFA.

... Double the damage for punch, kick, club and hatchet/sword attack. ... (p. 134, old Master Rules)

No other physical attacks are modified, but with TSM engaged you may move faster and do higher damage.

I would have to agree with Sleeping Dragon. Your friend was attempting something that is not possible. A mech with a hatchet can do death from above, but the hatchet would not affect the outcome in any way.

Correct.

As noted by SD TSM could add damage to a charge because of the added movement point, but that would be the only way.

Yes, DFA is just throwing your mech on the enemy, only weight and speed counts here (and skill of the pilot of course).

Speed doesn't count in a DFA...damage is always (weight/10)x3

I think he meant velocity, not speed. While it's not mapped in the rules, velocity would be a big factor in a Death-From-Above attack.

Nope, it's the weight of the mech that cause the damage, not the speed.

I'm talking scientific principles.

Weight alone does nothing if it doesn't move.

Force (which is what actually results in damage) is a result of Mass x Acceleration (which is the rate of change of an object's Velocity over time).

If you can get something to impart enough force, it doesn't really matter how big or heavy it is. A good example of this would be the basketball-sized Gauss slug. It's neither big, nor particularly heavy, but it can impart a massively disproportionate amount of force when it makes contact with the target because it has been accelerated to hypersonic velocity.

You may be correct in the real world, but your are deviating from the realms of btech. You have to alter your logic to apply btech physics to a situation.

I know. Like I said, such things aren't measured in the rules.

But if you read the various ruels, fluff, and novels, DFA is not a free fall drop, but a control manuver until you get right over the target and drop that last little bit. This is part of the reason you can get blasted so easily. Also makes sense. Just catapulting and praying means you will miss 95% of the time. So the damage system the rules have are acceptable. Actually meets most real rules of physics.

Nor should they be. If FASA put in every little thing that had a basis in science, the rules would be so vastly more complex that most of us now probably never would have gotten involved in the game.

I'll gladly take the rules as written, even with real world inconsitencies. It is, after all, a game.

It looks real impressive though. Makes newbies pass a brick every time.....
Its a bit rougher in the Solaris 7 dueling rules. Solaris stretches out the turns, to the point where youre actually waiting for a weapon to cycle and be ready to go. In that instance, its possible to jump and start maneuvering for a DFA, and get shot to pieces before you can make the attack.
Thats kind of rough on the ol' Ego.

I must have accidentally looked on charge attack damage, but I think that velocity is already calculated, because it's three times normal falling damage.
