Yep, when they say education, they mean it. I wish them luck with it, there's certainly a need for it out there to fill.

And its bound to better then the public school. A few years back I sat down and read my niece's high school history textbook. That thing was deeply pathetic, the publisher and authors should have been sued for fraud.

The civil was was one chapter, in which Lincoln's name was printed once (the only white male to be mentioned by name in the civil war), Lee and Grant and Jefferson Davis' names were not in there at all. But there was enough room in that single chapter to mention Harriet Tubman (the underground railroad heroin) by name about 14 times. And I paid taxes for that?

Hehehe. Don't even teach the histiry of your own country that well.
Judging by that, and if the rest (or at least other) text books are similarly lax, it means that we up here (Canada) actually know more about your history than you do!
That's actually a really depressing thought.

The text books have to be approved by the state education boards. If there's anything that can be attacked by the various grroups then it is often omitted or loosely covered. that's one reason we homeschool.

The problem isn't that potentially offensive stuff gets omitted but that all of the history texts used by public schools these days are writtin by left wing revisionist types who don't like mentioning white males in American history, etc. I heard a radio show some time back about this, all the dozen or so texts being published by the companies that do schoolbooks are the same, as pitifully bad as that one I flipped through if not worse.

The show was an interview with a conservative author who is putting out a homeschool American history textbook written with a patriotic perspective. I wish I could recall the name of it, but patriot and history are in the title. It was expected to sell pretty well.

The old McGuffy readers, used to teach reading in the 1800s, are now back in print. Lots of homeschoolers find these 100+ year old books much, much better then the current crop. The bidding on them on ebay was pretty fierce before the reprints started showing up.

Over here the problem isn't the books as much as the teaching. Budget cuts, saving money and all that means schools try to get by with as few full-time teachers as possible. Lots of temporary positions filled with people halfway through their education.

And of course the "equality" treatment. Slow learners are put in special groups, which is fine as they get more attention in a smaller group. But you can't make the average people feel bad by being better than them, so everyone else is forced to drag along at the same boring pace. All but the most single-minded students will start slacking off when they notice good grades come without working. The problem is when you want to enter higher schooling and just don't have the necessary discipline for reading thick academical texts since you got through the basics without sweating. Now I'm a lazy man lacking motivation.
