Why can't they use them? Anything else besides infantry and BA can. They use the same reactors as mechs (Well, fusion vehicles anyway) so why can't they use them?

Which is a fancy way of saying "because the makers of the rules decided in their infinite wisdom to make it so."

I prefer to think because it helps keep mechs the "King of the Battlefield" that they are supposed to be.

It's a simple contrivance the game designers put into effect to help keep vehicles and the like in check. Otherwise vehicles would gain rough parity with 'mechs.

You underestimate the weakness of vehicles. One hit can score a turret lock, ammo explosion, or something else nasty that otherwise screws over the vehicle, regardless of whether the weapon was a light machine gun or 6 RAC/20 shells. Double heatsinks, while useful, would put them closer to mechs, but not unbalancing.

Think about it. Lets say you want to add two ER medium lasers. Instead of having to add 10 tons in heat sinks, you only need 5. That's 5 tons you now have free. Twin ERPPCs? Only 15 heat sinks. That's 15 tons of weapon space opened up. You can cram an AC/20 into that space.

Double heatsinks in vehicles makes vehicles quite powerful.

While I agree it does make vehicles more powerful, it is more PLAUSABLE and makes energy vehicle construction much easier, as making a vehicle with more than a PPC or medium laser is inexorably hard to make due to the restriction and inability to overheat.

Story-wise, most houses would be rather conservative on upgrading vehicles with the DHS, because the houses are still in the process of upgrading mechs, and vehicles are easily destroyer, and then theres the whole cost issue.

Clans regard vehicles as second line craft so only a small fraction would be DHS equipped.

I suggest that for every say, 10 double heat sinks a vehicle has it loses an internal space to bulk, and apply the
same cost multipliers...

Edit- Modifed 1st paragraph so I dont AS MUCH as an idiot...

Stop right there.

"Realistic".

Battletech is not a simulation of giant mechs fighting, it's a fiction game about giant mechs fighting. "Realism" has little place here.

Well if you want a pluasable sounding explanation mechs have more surface area per ton than a vehicle so that there would be more exterior space to radiate heat from.

Actually, Protos can't use 'em either.

On the one hand, the words 'realistic' and 'battletech' arent usually found in the same sentence, but Id settle for 'plausable'.
Also, aonther person stated that mechs are more expensive than vehicles. I think thats a double edged sword. Mechs cost more, thus it stands to reason that youre going to want a mech with every advantage. Why drop XX-skillion on a mech that cant stand up to a stiff breeze?
Vehicles are cheaper to produce, and are a bit more 'flimsy' than a mech. So why drop loads of c-bills on a vehicle that cant take as much abuse?
Thats my 'plauseable' answer for why vehicles cant use DHS. If you want 'realistic', youre going to have to ask someone else.

Exactly. The game is about BattleMechs, other units are only there as support. The designers just have to give the mechs some advantage.
