Okay during a converstion today, a couple of the guys I play BT with were talking about how many troopers (infantry guys) actually makes up 1 ton for BT weight reasons etc...

One was going with a squad sized element would meet the one ton setting and the other was thinking more along the lines of a platoon.

Now I think the squad idwea could work, since it would fit with how APCs and IFVs do actually work, but given that this further in the future and better tech and all that I can see the other side of the conversation as well.

So what do you folks think about this? What is the size of a unit of soliders that would equal one ton for weight purposes for the infantry bays on vehicles?

According to the BMR

A platoon of Foot Infantry is 3 tons.
A platoon of motorized Infantry is 6 tons.
A platoon of jump infantry is 4 tons.
A BA squad is 4 ton [IS] or 5 tons [Clan].

To go into this further...Combat Operations lists the average foot soldier as 0.1 tons (220 pounds, including equipment), the average jump trooper at 0.18 tons, and, IIRC, the average motorized trooper at 0.21 tons...

All battle armor is considered 1 ton per suit, even if you have light armor (max mass of 750 kg per suit) or an assault suit (2000kg per suit max)...

Just out of curiosity (and since I really dont know) how many squads per platoon?

I am working on a couple conversions as well and was going to be asking this question as well. I have 2.5 tons dedicated for the infantry but that can change, especially since I was only thinking about having a squad of men per vehicle. If I can free up more weight than that would make me happy.

4 squads = 1 Platoon
Though there is also up to 3 to add to that total. So a platoon can be 28-31 troops depending on officers. Can't remember if it's 3 or 4 platoons to equal a company though. It's slightly different for grunts than tanks and mechs.

That depends on condition of the troops. Two troopers comfortably sitting can be replaced by three dead or one wounded. Weight of the platoon can be reduced (explosives or energy weapons) or increased (bullets, mechs like the Piranha can double platoon weight in moments) by attacks. Battlemech physical attacks can also make troopers wider, even if somewhat flat.

If that is the case then a lot of the OFFICAL CANON vehicles can not carry troops since they have to small of a bay for the infantry...which is what was the root issue of this topic between the guys.

Well, 1 Platoon is 4 squads [foot, motor] and 3 squads [jump] for the IS, and 5 squads [foot, motor] and 4 squads [jump] for the Clans.

As such, a 1 ton carrying capacity can haul 1 squad of foot and jump but not motor which is 7 men [IS] or 5 men [Clan.]

As for how many platoons make a Company, the number I have seen is congruent with standard tank and mech formation of 3 platoons is 1 Company as a Company is always 12 squads [1 mech, 1 tank, 1 BA squad of 4 men, or 7 men.]

Where did you get information that a jump point for the Clans is only 20 men? I don't recall reading that anywhere...it's always a base 5 with the Clans...

I gotta admit, that's horrible, but funny. Good job.

I thought I remembered reading that it is a base 5 per star but it gets broken down even further for INF and BA. Since its a point of 5, each point is either 1 vehicle, mech, fighter, or 5 battlearmor. So in reality it should be 25 elementals for a star. But that may have changed and I cant remember what book I saw that in and it may be dated material. (and of course there is always the possibility that I read it wrong).

A single squad of Clan infantry is 5 while IS is 7.

A platoon of normal clan infantry is 25 regardless of the type, IE: jump, foot, motorized. Unlike IS which is 28 for foot/motorized and 21 for jump.

A single point of a Clan star is either 1 mech, 2 vehicles, 2 fighters, 5 elementals, or 1 infantry platoon.

Are you sure, i remember that each infantry platoon was equal to a Lance or Star of units not a squad or point.
