Okay, played some battletech yesterday with Oafman. I had an odd idea which we didn't get around to trying so I'll post it here and see what y'all think before we play it.
Take Oafman's Fast Frog and pit it against my Dominator. He's got speed and manueverability and I've got sheer firepower and endurance. Kinda lika a hyena versus a rhino. Who do you think will win? Using 4/4 pilots in each one. I need only score one real hit to win but only have so many rounds of cannon ammo to do it in. He can papercut me all day til I drop or take an ammo hit. We will be trrying out the floating crits rule that was told to us in our last match-up thread.
So, who do you think will win? How would you play each one?
Terrain will be random and probably be 2-4 mapsheets so he can get the long runs in to help him out.

I've had a battle like this. I had a Daishi Widowmaker, and my opponent had a Koshi. For about six turns he ran around me, piddling on me, and I never got a single hit on him. Then he got the oportunity for a DFA.
I was unaware that it was possible to decimate a Mech so completely. The only thing left coming at me was the head, and the Ultra 20 dealt with that.

The Fast Frog has no chance. In order to attck, it must get with in range of the Dominator. Where it puts 2 MPLs and an SRM 2 against an LB20-X cluster round (or perhaps a standard), one or two standard AC/20 rounds, and a few medium lasers. For every turn in which it attempts to attack. The Dominator's flip arms remove the option of running up for an unopposed backshot, and on no location can the Frog take an AC/20 round without major damage.
The only chance for the Frog is lucky rolls; head hits and engine crits in groups. Not impossible (I've had it happen), but not something to depend on.
On a side note, I particularly enjoy the image of knocking the Fast Frog off its feet with an AC/20 round or two.

I wouldn't call the frogger chanceless, but it surely needs a pilot who is a LOT better than the guy in the Dominator.
I've seen a Marauder II taken down by an Osiris with a better pilot. He would jump at least seven hexes and exploit partial cover shamelessly. That's a nice +7 on the other guys to-hit rolls. Then just go away for a round or two while you cool down. Oh, and never come out of hiding if you lose the initiative roll.

I've seen a Marauder taken out by a Jenner with one lucky shot (only one medium laser hit, and it blew straight through gyro!).
I've also taken out an Orion and most of a Victor with a Wolfhound.
Flukes DO happen, but it is best to NOT rely on them.

True enough. And perhaps I shouldn't have said "no chance." But the Frog does have slim chances. Especially since the Dominator packs such heavy weapons. And unlike a Wolfhound, the Frog has no ranged weapons.

Just one good shot to that AC 20 ammo and the Dominator is done. I would still give my frog about a 15% chance and that is about it. I like the Frog and have used it to good effect several times, but I do not like the prospect of putting it on a field with 2 AC 20s and no other targets but me. When I used it last against Seraph I actually managed a couple of turn where he needed a 13 even though I was sitting right in front of him.

I posted this as a good example of the fast versus the big. His mech has a decent chance at victory. All he has to do is maintain a high rate of movement and not stop at all. That's one reason I am putting them on a large map instead of just one map. The Dominator has tons of armor and a very high damage potential. However, he has limited ammo and limited range. So it comes down to endurance for the Dominator. Can he get his hit in before he takes too much damage to do it. Heat can become a factor as well. If the Dominator slows down too much he'll present a nice target for the zipping Fast Frog to hit at speed. And on the arm flips, I've never used that with the Dominator yet. he's never faced anything lighter than 95 tons yet.
