The engine... overkill. Its an assault mech make sure you can use all those 20+ internals. A standard engine and 3/5 would leave you with something approximating my CM L model of the Atlas.
Personally, your spending enough money to buy a heavy lance of mechs and you get very little for it. Especially since you can't let your armour get too thin.

Umm.. either you didn't read the fluff or chose to ignore it. The engine was specifically placed to improve the mobility of the old Atlas. Also, as stated in a previous thread, this is a prototype. Say it, PRO-TO-TYPE. Good boy. I agree it's very pricey, however much more is spent in R&D, let alone a preproduction model. Every custom I design with an "X" in the designation is a prototype. It may or may not be in production, it may or may not be in use at all. And btw, there are generally 47 internals to fill up. Doesn't mean I have to.

Besides, the cost is less important than being effective for something meant to attack stuff. You can only transport so many mechs on your dropships, and they'd better be capable of killing a lot of stuff. The defenders, on the other hand, can spend their money on quantity instead.

Well, in my mind. I do spent lots of money on my attack forces. Frequently I've got a CV or something to carry my 6 expensive Assault Aero fighters and lots of Artillery and more Aero units.
My mech forces get what ever is left over, because they're more to hold the defenders somewhere while the rest of my army kills them.
Although, sometimes I've been known to spend a large amount on my Battle Armour units. To me mechs in campaigns are too big a target. Aero Fighters and artillery get shot at less;).
Sure I'm stuck on standard engined inexpensive mechs. But, does anyone ever question where my campaign forces spend all their cash if I do that?
I don't worry about hitting fast mechs some days because of the # of Aerofighters I use to strafe such areas.
I realise I've gotten off topic but in my mind anything about the 320 class engine is pretty useless even if its XL, or Light or whatever.
Which is why the only mechs I like that are 4/6 assaults are the 80 tonners. After that its kind of silly. The tonnage to bonuses added doesn't work out in my mind.
As for you guys complaining that my mechs are too inexpensive to make a viable assault force. I've won all three planets I've contested. Sure my opponents think I'm nuts but I fight Snow Raven style almost. I take out your Aerospace, and then artillery and strafe your units out of existance as I slowly cover the world in my flag.
