If you check that design, yes, another 100-tonner, you will find that it got totally utterly canned.

With good reason.

Short and bad fluff, and some obvious design flaws.

However, as I said in my review, the design continues to intrigue me. Because it is a novel and interesting play with the idea. It feels like a genuine upgrade that wasn't fully thought out.

So, is it worth a try to improve it big-time?

- adding double heat sinks
- adding endo steel to add two more tons of gauss ammo and 3 more double heat sinks
- removing the hand actuators
- creating a new fluff - I would volunteer my beloved Jade Falcons as creators - as a calculated insult after Kerensky ended up joining Clan Wolf (the rivalry of the two clans goes back a long, long time).

Is that an idea? Or are you way too sick and tired of 100-tonners?

Here is the link: http://www.mordel.net/tro/mech.php?mid=1710

Here is another spectacularly craptacular design, the Orb Weaver:

http://www.mordel.net/tro/mech.php?mid=1549

Would it be possible to make that one even border-line feasible?

- make it lvl1, remove CASE
- the armour would have to be dropped by .5 tons, since that last half ton only yields 1 pt.
- the engine really wants to be bigger. But that would require 2.5 (120 engine) + 1 (gyro) tons. Meaning either both ML and a ton of armour has to go, or the LL has to be downgraded and another ML can be added, as well as a heat sink.

Of course, it would be colourful to retain that ludicrous speed. Hey, it would be spectacularly crap, but in that day and age would at least stand out in the firepower department.

Hey, a BV of 839 is surely a factor to consider it! Actually another change:

- move the FL-mounted ML to the RLs - since quads can't torso-twist, and this is so horribly slow, it really, really needs that rear protection. The BV actually rises to 878, which isn't a bad thing, as it shows that the BV system works.

Well, is there any hope for this bomb?

If I rate a 'mech, it will have caught my interest. And if any design manages to catch my interest, yet end up rating a 0.0, well, that is intriguing and lets me ponder it.....

Yeah, maybe I should go and start redesigning some of the designs here. And I could try to stay away from the 100-tonners, too....

BTW: this comes in at 2,996,800, which compares to the 30-35 tonners of that era - definitely a reason why Liao might choose to field a 1/2-moving heavy 'mech.

What about this one? Another one that is utterly worthless, which I reviewed a while ago.

http://www.mordel.net/tro/mech.php?mid=1576

Do you agree with the assumptions of my review?

How could one make this *playable* without actually changing it?!?

My suggestions:

- lvl1, so the ER weapons become standard
- one hatchet only, remove the other one for heat sinks.
- remove the superfluous half ton of armour, maybe even remove a full ton and add another heat sink - that way at least PPC and LRMs can fire without overheating

Which leaves these problems:

- needs to be a guardian 'mech for objectives (it has low speed, but still needs the enemy to close with it)
- why then the energy weapons?
- would the FedSuns / Lyran Commonwealth really build this? Maybe to guard the Hatchetman facility?
- What is a Francia?

On a downside note, with all these 'improvements', it would actually amount to 993 points.....

Okay, this is now a thread for me to look at some of the designs which scored well below 1.0....

Comstarone, are you still here? We made you welcome on this board, right?

This design was trashed, but it was agreed that it had potential, as an UrbanMech lite:

http://www.mordel.net/tro/mech.php?mid=1713

Now, here the upgrade/change is easy:

- DHS, removing the spare ones to gain 3 tons
- standard engine
- addtionally 2 RL 15 and 1 RL 10 or 5 RL 10

Yes, a one-shot wonder, but this would retain the spirit of the design. This was pretty much the consensus of the reviews.

You like to try a joint upgrade programme?
Then we can think up new or update fluff to post along with it.. i've been playing with the idea of improving those monster as well...

Hey, I'm all ears - I can work in a team, as Warhammer: 3025 can attest.

What about the Purple Flame? That one ain't actually that horrible - it would only need DHS, which means the ammo would have to be stored in the CT/Legs, and then some decent fluff explaining how the WoB stole the RAC technology from the FedCom. I think a jumping 3/5/3 'mech can kinda-sorta cope with a maximum range of 15.

I usually private message someone before I even think of redesigning their mech, and then post it here, before asking permission to post to Tech Read out.

I just find it eases everyone's mind:-P

Whoa, but it is ok, no, in fact, it is rewarded that we can post comments any and all times in the TRO section? And that we can comment freely on the comments?

Ok, to cut a potential discussion short: I AM SORRY if I offended any of the three above designers. In fact, Comstarone should know that I appreciate his work, I like that design a lot, it just has obvious flaws. Star Commander One-Eye and Ter Kerensky: I also appreciate the originality of your designs. Making them viable on the table top will only require a little retinkering.

And that I come back to these designs, after having commented on them months ago, just shows that they stuck to me. I would consider that a compliment to the base design. At least they are interesting!

Is that what they call that? I do it exactly the same way. I send a PM to ask if I can use their 'Mech. And I was quite surprised to get one myself.

As to what to do if they don't respond. I'd just go ahead and do it if there's no response. I've done exactly that. Some people just pop in and leave.

I was at one message board that had almost 400 people with less than five posts to their name after a year of being logged into the system. Half of those had one post or less.
