The idea was inspired by Double Heat-Sinks, in that, while they operated at double-capacity, and weighed the same, they took up more critical space.
General overview
If a 'mech can be equipped with standard Jump Jets, it can carry Double-Strength Jump Jets (hereafter condensed to DSJJs). DSJJs allow a 'mech to jump two times further than with a standard jump jet. They generate the same amount of heat, and weigh the same, but they occupy two critical slots instead of one. Standard Jump Jets and DSJJs are incompatable: if a 'mech carries DSJJs, it cannot carry standard Jump Jets.
Restrictions
Unlike standard Jump Jets, DSJJs cannot support non-even walking speeds (I know that sentence is confusing, but I'll try to elaborate).
EXAMPLE: A SHD-2H Shadow Hawk has a walking speed of 5. It has a jump rating of 3, thanks to its three Jump Jets. However, convert the Jump Jets to DSJJs, and you have a jump rating of 6. The rules don't allow that, so it has to remove one DSJJ, giving it a legal jump rating of 4.
Benefit
Take the SHD-2H Shadow Hawk in the example above: it has lost a half-ton of weight, which it can use to shore up the armor, and has gained an additional Jump MP.
Downside
Crit-deficient designs, like most 3050+ 'mechs (with their XL Engines, Double Heat-Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous armor, and Endo-Steel structure), Generally don't have the luxury of throwing away crits on non-essential systems like Jump Jets. Their problem generally isn't weight, but a lack of critical slots to allocate items to.

An interesting idea.
Sounds sort of like the improved jump jets, which let you jump at your run speed, instead of walk.
Not sure if I like the even jump limitation, but it makes sense enough.

In the vast majority of cases there is so little gained by this that it makes them almost worthless.

I can think of many light designs that could benifit from have an extra ton or two.
The WSP-3M Wasp, for example. Replace the 6 standard Jump Jets with three DSJJs, and you can increase the armor from a barely-adequate 2.5 tons, to a maximum load of 4 tons.
The SDR-8M gains 2 tons of space when switching from regular Jump Jets to DSJJs. That's another Medium Pulse Laser, or twin ER Lasers, or another two tons of armor.
So

Gee, two mechs out of how many thousands of designs?
Like I said, in the vast majority of cases there is so little gained by this that it makes them almost worthless.

Kinda like the mechanical jump boosters from THB?

They're actually more akin to Improved Jump Jets from Max-Tech.
