Rottweiler RC-ISU
(Remote Controlled Infantry Support Unit)

Purpose & History:
The Rottweiler is a relatively small, remote-controlled vehicle capable of providing infantry units with necessary fire support, scouting, and performing duty as a gun emplacement. The original design came about when an Anubis Defense Instries Engineer noticed his son playing with a small remote-controlled car. Following in his father's footsteps, the son had assembled an apparatus on top of the car to launch fireworks.

Over the months that followed, the man worked tirelessly, consulting Marauders armor crewmen, as well as veteran infantry. Eventually, Commander Buck Michaels learned of the project, and asked to see it. The engineer was happy to show off his design, but admitted that he did not have the time or necessary talent to construct a working prototype. To his surprise, he learned that Commander Michaels had been an avid model builder as a boy, and was skilled in building working models from scratch.

The two began working together, and three months later, a working, small-scale prototype was finished. The 1/8th scale model, constructed of balsa wood, sheet styrene, and various odds and ends, was demonstrated before the Anubis Board of Directors, and was followed by a petition from both Marauders infantry and Anubis' own security branch to see the unit in production. The project recieved the full blessing of the board, and was completed less than a year later.

Capabilities:
Named the Rottweiler, after a breed of Terran dog often used in military K-9 units, the ISU is simpler in function than more common remote drones, and because of this simplicity, more robust. Weighing two tons, "the Rotty" as it's commonly called, is not especially fast, since it was designed to support infantry, not race them. It is exceptionally well-armored, comparable to Kanazuchi heavy battlesuits, and constructed to carry a variety of weapons or spotting gear. It should be noted that the Rotty is not an omnivehicle of any type, but the simplicity of its design makes changing weapons packages simple. However this process does take 48 hours to complete.

One of the more remarkable features of the Rottweiler is its ability to be placed in "sentry gun" mode. In this mode, the unit does not move, but will passively scan the IFF signatures of any unit that comes within range. Units with the incorrect or with no IFF signature are fired upon.

The remote control system is a direct descendant of the systems that have been used in remote control toys for centuries, although it is considerably less prone to electromagnetic interference than its ancestors. However, 'mech or vehicle-mounted ECM gear will still cut the connection between the controller and the unit.

As previously mentioned, the Rottweiler can carry a variety of weapons packages or surveillance/ECM gear. the basic model is a simple fusion-powered tracked unit, slightly under two meters high, with a turret mounted atop the chassis. (The RC-ISU/A) The primary weapons package is four heavy machine guns and one-quarter ton of ammunition. The secondary model replaces the machine gun turret with two small lasers, or one medium laser (The RC-ISU/BS or RC-ISU/BM). Third unit is used for short-range fire support, carrying a single SRM-2 with half a ton of ammunition (The RC-ISU/C). There is no streak version available at this time. The final package, used for spotting and surveillance, carries a TAG unit (The RC-ISU/D).

Deployment:
Currently still in the testing phases, the Rottweiler is only known to be used by Buck's Marauders and Anubis Security Forces. Designated as heavy fire support, they are generally believed to be deployed two to four per platoon. Intercepted fragments of battle transmissions have shown that the Marauders refer to their Rottweilerr-equipped squads as "Big Dogs," or "K-9" Patrols.

Game Notes:
Rottweiler RC-ISU
Tonnage: 2
Cruise: 1
Flank: 2

Armor: 16 (standard)

Weapons:
A: 4 heavy MGs, .25 tons ammo
BS: 2 Small Lasers
BM: 1 Medium Laser
C: 1 SRM-2
D: 1 Tag
Self-Destruct Mode: 10 points of damage, + standard damage from exploding ammunition (if applicable)

Additional Weapons Payloads:
Any weapon not weighing more than the standard loads (ammunition included) may be used instead of the standard payloads.

Movement:
The Rottweiler suffers the same penalties as all tracked vehicles, and may operate up to 10 hexes (300 meters) from the controlling unit. Any further, and the controller's signal will be lost. When this happens, the Rottweiler ceases to move, and will not fire. Moving the controller within ten hexes of the Rottweiler will reengage the signal again allowing the unit to function.

Combat:
During combat, the Rottweiler takes damage in the same manner as battlesuit infantry. If the squad controlling the Rottweiler is destroyed, the Rottweiler ceases to function for the rest of the game. The Rottweiler does not suffer the same targeting penalties for drones, as it is equipped with the same standard targeting system as a battlemech. Damage done by the controlling infantry unit is reduced by 1 man, since that man is controlling the Rottweiler. If the Rottweiler itself is destroyed, the controller may fire with the rest of his unit. The Rottweiler may target different units than the rest of the controlling squad, if any are in range.

Sentry Gun Mode:
The Rottweiler may be deployed as a sentry gun, wherein it is immobile, but its limited AI automatically will fire at any non-friendly unit that comes within range, until the unit is destroyed or moves out of range, or until the Rottweiler itself is destroyed or runs out of ammunition. It may be deployed in sentry gun mode at the end phase of a turn, and returned to normal mode during the end phase of any subsuquent turn, only if the controlling squad is within ten hexes. If the squad is destroyed while the Rottweiler is in sentry mode, it must remain in sentry mode for the rest of the game. While in sentry mode, the Rottweiler's controlling unit may move any distance from the Rottweiler, but must be within ten hexes in order to command it to return to active duty. The Rottweiler may be deployed as a sentry gun using Hidden Units rules, and will automatically fire on any enemy unit coming within weapons range.

Self-Destruct Mode:
If necessary, the Rottweiler may be placed in Sentry Gun mode, with orders to self-destruct if approached by unfriendly units. While this explosion does minimal damage to mechs and vehicles, it is enough to give infantry, even battlesuit troops, pause. Commonly, this is done when a Rottweiler is either out of ammunition, or too damaged to move.

Whaddya think?

For any ground pounders out there, this will be a welcome addition.

I generally have 1 or 2 per platoon. Although I still have to make miniatures of the darn thing!

It's based of the Tarantula from Warhammer 40K.
