Well, recently I've seen a lot of people referencing their personal rides:
Vagabond - Dervish
Erenon - Panther (variant)
SabreDance - Whithworth
Vampire - Wolverine-M
Warhammer3025 - like, duh
I would be interested in all of your preferences. Are you all die-hard role-players? If yes, in which era? And which 'mech?
To those, who aren't (like me), what 'mech would you chose if Mordel's board was a unit?
edit: actually, to beef it up. If you have an RPG character, please include him (write like you were him) in your replies. Even if you weren't following CBT:RPG rules when you thought him up!
edit 2: added a 'sub-'title
edit 3: changed subtitle

Ok, just to clarify: this is NOT a "what is the best 'mech" or even a "what is your favourite 'mech" though that will obviously influence your choice.
My ride of choice would be:
3025 - Blackjack! You know I love that one. But it has other things going for it: It is versatile, I could work well for a unit, giving very-long range support. I could also fare well in a stand-up fight against anything my weight or less. It is mobile. It is tough. I'd be a trooper.
Another favourite is the Rifleman. Love it to bits. But, honestly, I would prefer to command a lance-mate in it, than pilot it myself, maybe due to the sole factor of it only having a cockpit armour of 6.
3050+ - ah, you got me. Wouldn't have a clue! I mean, the upgraded Dervish is nice. The upgraded Zeus or the Gallowglas are a mechwarrior's wet dream. But I don't feel anywhere near as strongly about any of those machines as about basically all 3025 designs. But yeah, this is about what I would pilot. And I guess since I'm in no postition to acquire a leading position in this outfit, I will gladly use whichever design is assigned to me - as long as it does not have an XL engine, assuming it does not mount at least 14.5 tons of armour, ie is an assault 'mech!
Clans - I am Jade Falcon! No foe can withstand the wrath of jymset Hazen! And I am proud of the knowledge that my Clan is the origin of the best battlemech to ever grace the face of any combat ground: the mighty Summoner! No single foe will ever vanquish this symbol of our strength. I myself am proud to report that I have piloted one on numerous occasions.
That being said, to be true to my origins - I have always held the above design in the greatest awe that would befit a Clan mechwarrior. However, my starts were somewhat more humble: I piloted one of the rare Nova omnimechs, the preferred ride of our SaKhan Samantha Clees and the design that won the Bloodname for our freeborn ristar, Diana Pryde. Truly, it is a sight for the ancestors when my unit strides to battle using these two magnificent designs!
(OOC: The pic of the Summoner - which I honestly hold to be the best 'mech ever! - in the Battletech compendium sucked me into BT. But after my first game - my Atlas against a Victor, strictly 3025 - I went off to play Mechwarrior 2 for a while and absolutely fell in love with the Nova, going so far as to make that my middle-name when talking BT to friends!!!)
Yeah, the Clan category is a choice of favourites. But really, they aren't any of the five official munchy or mini-maxed designs: the Turkina, Daishi, Masakari, Mad Cat or Ryoken. So yeah, I'd insist on my Black Hawk. And yes, the use of the above designation and contractions should tell you that I'm, once again, bloodname-less (though I will always choose Hazen).

If I had to pick a clan machine (ugh...) I'd probably go for the Summoner. Good speed, firepower, and armor load.
Otherwise, well...duh. _________________ Evil is like a bowl of oranges. Only one, instead, is an orange of DOOM. That orange has a fate to rule over the other oranges with an iron fist. That orange is me.

My "Clan" rides are a Stone Rhino and a Viper B....I got the Stone Rhino when I head capped it with my Viper.
My normal rides are a Clint 2-3T or a Grasshopper 5H.
I seldom role play in CBT universe any more so it's a sort of a stretch to truly call any of these my "rides".

Hey! It's my RPG character that rides a Wolverine - M, not me!
An important distinction!

I was a wet-behind-the ears recruit for House Davion back in 3020. I joined the regular army as a tanker and developed an affinity for manuever and support warfare.
My first assignment was on the sensor suite of a scout tank. After a year at that, having demonstrated supurb range targeting skills, they put me on the LRM 20 on a Hunter. I spent a year there. My abilities with sensors and LRMs brought me to my CO's attention and I was sent through a special OCS program that turned me into one of Hanse Davion's new "Regular" mechwarriors. This was the first program that opened the ranks of the mechwarriors to non-nobles, and I am eternally grateful to the Fox for the chance.
I was made Mechwarrior and assigned to a Valkyrie for scout and support work. I spent two years in a Valk before being promoted to LT and sent to the Periphery to deal with Capellan and Pirate incursions.
My Valkyrie was destroyed in an artillery strike on our base by Capellans. Shell came through the top of the hangar and took out my Valk, two Wasps, and a Stinger.
With my entire Lance destroyed (but the pilots still alive), I was saved by my Brother, a Captain who happened to be on a nearby planet. He'd salvaged a Whitworth after a battle with some Pirates. It was in remarkable condition, only the head needed to be replaced. The former pilot was no longer with us. I was reassigned to his unit as Company XO and given command of Fire Lance (my Whitworth, two Valks, and a salvaged Javalin).
My brother commanded the company and Strike Lance, and he never lets me forget that he flies a Wolverine.
I was offered the chance to take a heavy Fire Company about three years later. I turned it down because I wanted to stay on the Periphery. I liked the work, I liked the people. I Captain and was promoted to the head of the Light Horse. I still used the Whitworth. I liked it. The unit I turned down was refitting at Sommerset when the Falcons landed. I may or may not have been with it in 3050, but I'm glad I didn't have to find out.
My brother moved on to Battalion command, and ultimately retired about 5 years ago as a Colonel. His last mech was an Awsome which he offered to me. I used it for about a year after I made Major, but it was too much of a blunt stick. I scared the heck out of friends and enemies alike. It was massively unsuited for police work, so I went back to my Whitworth and my usual pirate interdiction.
In 3055, after we started pushing the Clans back, they needed pacification and garrison troops. I volunteered. Due to the level of technology we were fighting, I had my lance refitted. In 3056 my Whitworth came back a little heavier. They upped the armor and the speed, and added a few more medium lasers. We also picked up a spotter mech (playfully refered to as the FW, or Fly-on-the-Wall. It's official designation is Walleye.) The other mechs in my command lance were medium customs, Standish and Lewis. Essentially screeners for the Whitworth II.
We participated in a handful of engagements on Port Royal after the lead forces moved on.
I made Major about a year ago and was assigned here to the Davion diplomatic station. Shortly after, we had the oportunity to join Ralgith's Soldiers of Fortune and go after the clans, but that job fell through.
And now they make me ride a desk most days. I still get to go out to the firing range from time to time, though.
ooc: that's the novelization of about 10 years of Battletech games with my favorite character. Over the years he's also become a pretty good officer, diplomat, and land manager. He's a cop, basically.
Now, I did like my stint in the Awesome. So when we want to have a duel, that is the mech I usually take, BT. I also have an affinity for the Axeman, but I've only flown one of those in two campaigns. Recently, I've been using an Aerojock. And unlike many of my friends, I like close air support. If I'm not stitching the ground with missiles and bombs, I'm not enjoying myself. I let the other guys dogfight. _________________ "Politics is the Art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, misdiagnosing the problem, and applying the wrong solution."

My favorite 3025 mech hands down is the JR-7F Jenner
When I play Clans if I am not using one of my custom designs I use either the Hellion or the Phantom

I've had a few rides when role-playing. Locust, Archer, Scorpion, Vulcan, Firestarter. I would say if I had to join our "unit" I would pilot a Locust. It's an old favorite and it kinda suits my tactics. Fast and durable; hit and fade. I'm not much of a stand up brawler. I like to keep moving and without jumpjets I don't have to worry about landings. _________________ If ignorance is bliss, then why are you so miserable?

My ride always has been, and always will be, the Centurion. Hooked on her since Mechcommander 1.
I think i must be the only one sad enough to play through the game with just Centurions. Apart from Clan stuff, cos in MC its like golddust.

Woot! You're not the only one! A PPC, an LRM, and whatever else you think you might need.
BTW, I always went for the A variant _________________ Evil is like a bowl of oranges. Only one, instead, is an orange of DOOM. That orange has a fate to rule over the other oranges with an iron fist. That orange is me.

Oh... Lets see
3050-3060: Marauder, several different Variants fit my style, so I won't name em here.
Another possibility is a Bandersnatch BNDR-01A in 3055+ as I LOVE that mech. Especially if I can replace the ACs with Clan ones of same caliber.
As a clanner:
Timberwolf A, or if close combat, D
Or:
Summoner M, or Prime if terrain was VERY open.
