To quote from the press release:

President of Dreamwave Productions, Pat Lee stated "there are a number of reasons for my decision to close Dreamwave," citing that "the shrinking comic book market combined with a weak U.S. dollar and unsustainable monetary commitments has finally proven to be too financially taxing."

As the only Canadian independent comics publisher, Dreamwave Productions has struggled in recent years to maintain its status within a relentlessly shrinking comic book market. Unfortunately, consistently diminishing sales totals over the last several years have taken their toll on the small publisher and made it impossible to continue.

Disappointing to say the least. However, I suppose it's not that unexpected. They could never seem to meet their deadlines with their comics and also seemed to be trying to expand out more than they were capable of handling (anyone reminded of FASA?).

I've been talking with a few fans of DW, plus reading stuff at a few Transformers fan sites. Here's what I found out:

1. Titles - Transformers is what made them, and as such Dreamwave wound up trying to cash in too heavily on them. They had four Transfomers titles running at once (two of them set in an alternate version of the Generation 1 continuity), and were looking at starting a fifth.

2. Titles, pt. 2 - In addition to Transformers, Dreamwave decided to get the rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as Mega Man and Devil May Cry. TMNT only lasted two issues (out of a four-part series), and Mega Man folded after three (I don't know how well DMC did). As such, Dreamwave never recovered the money they spent getting the titles.

3. Titles, part 3 - While all this was going on, Dreamwave had a handful of originals lingering in the background. Note I said background, as fan attention from the other series never transferred over.

4. Lawsuit - The two guys doing Transformers: War Within initiated a lawsuit over failure of Dreamwave to pay them. When they signed on, there was a part in their contract which specified that they agreed to do War Within and "other promotional items;" they allege that it was verbally implied that these items would be nothing more than the occasional character profile / bio. They also allege that when the decision was made to do a War Within spin-off, Dreamwave used the wording as an excuse to deny them the royalties.

5. Hasbro - About a week before Dreamwave shut down, a rumor began to circulate that Hasbro was considering revoking the franchise rights to Transformers.
