It focuses on TSR a little too much I think. When I was in college I found the wargame market to be thriving. The big problem facing the wargame manufacturers now is how to keep those college wargamers interested after they graduate and keep them playing for life.

Ditto, focussing too much on TSR. (A British company, if I recall correctly.) From the read it doesn't sound like their predecessor's business practices left them much choice but to offend the core. What were they thinking doing lifetime subscriptions?
That said, the biggest problem I've always had with wargames (even BT) is getting a game together. They can take hours just to play, set-up is a long process, clean-up even longer. Add in travel time (unless your playing your brothers, and they have lives outside of you) and a single war game becomes an all-day affair.
By comparison, RPGs are fairly self contained. The GM has to do some prep-work, but the players just show up, pull out their characters and dice, and go.
I would blame the death of Wargames on the speed-up of society in the 80's and 90's. It would also explain the computer explosion. Self-contained, no need to find an opponnent, no need to plan in advance, and saving allows you to play as you have time without taking up valuable table space.

I wouldn't go that far. Games in general suffer when the gamers grow up and get jobs. And families.
One guy is now the local chief spare parts seller for a certain car manufacturer, and married. They found a nice house in the countryside some 15 kilometers from here.
Two of them are now teachers, and married. Both have moved away, although they're still within 40 kilometers.
One works for a company that services aquariums, of all things. His wife is nice as can be, and their daughter lovelier still. They live about 40 kilometers from me.
I'm the only one of my old group to live in the same old town. Lucky me, I found a job that suits me and pays well enough. Unfortunately the only nice local woman I know thinks you should have spare men, in case one is exhausted.
